Job Overview

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct research in the Toney Lab and contribute to publications, data analysis, and presentations. The role supports grant‑funded projects requiring electrophysiological, optogenetic, and related techniques.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct research projects under general supervision.
  • Perform mouse and/or rat experiments using ex vivo and in vivo electrophysiology.
  • Integrate optogenetic and chemo genetic (DREADDs) methods into experiments.
  • Conduct stereotaxic surgeries for drug, tracer, or viral vector delivery.
  • Expose animals to chronic intermittent hypoxic hypercapnia to model sleep apnea.
  • Investigate mechanisms to treat respiratory depression caused by opiates.
  • Maintain laboratory records, tissue samples, and reagents; comply with data security and safety protocols.
  • Analyze research data and summarize results.
  • Write and contribute to research papers, articles, and publications.
  • Assist with laboratory cleaning and maintenance.
  • Mentor, assist, or supervise student and graduate researchers.
  • Prepare presentation materials and progress reports for sponsors.
Qualifications
  • Required:

    PhD, MD, or DVM in a related field.
  • Preferred:
    Experience with whole‑cell patch clamp electrophysiology and optogenetics; in vivo single‑neuron recordings; live‑cell imaging of genetically encoded reporters.
  • Experience with the management and execution of grant‑funded research projects.
  • Ability to pursue high‑quality publications and extramural fellowship training.
  • Strong intellectual ownership of assigned projects.
  • Willingness to travel and work weekends/after‑hours as needed.
