Job DescriptionThe Assistant Research Scientist will utilize techniques and strategies developed through their education and experience to support facility users in meeting the imaging requirements of their research projects. In addition to contributing to facility Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the Assistant Research Scientist will provide image science expertise to support grant writing, research manuscripts, and other publications for the facility’s user group.
This role is responsible for the daily management of the Integrated Microscopy and Imaging Lab (IMIL) operations, supervision of undergraduate student workers, development and implementation of microscopy-based imaging strategies tailored to user needs, especially for investigators with limited imaging experience, and oversight of instrument use.
Commensurate based on education and experience.
ScheduleFull‑time; may require weekend or after‑normal hours.
RequiredEducation and Experience
PhD in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications- Three years of related experience in a specialized and relevant field of research.
- Experience in optical microscopy, confocal microscopy, slide scanner, multiphoton in vivo experiments, TIRF, spinning disk confocal, and atomic force microscopy.
- Knowledge of designing imaging experiments for various samples, cell lines and tissues, tissue clearing, etc.
- Previous experience with image data analysis using Imaris, QuPath, Image
J/Fiji software packages, writing macros, etc. - Knowledge of working with rodents.
- Assists with preparation and cleaning of worksite.
- Helps organize worksite and determines supplies needed for effective research.
- Analyzes research data and summarizes results.
- Writes and may contribute to research papers, articles, and publications.
- Assists with grant acquisition.
- Demonstrated expertise in high‑end imaging techniques, including but not limited to confocal and multi‑photon microscopy.
- Develops microscopy imaging protocols needed to accomplish experimental research goals.
- Manages and operates microscope systems and computers.
- Operates new instruments and writes SOPs for instrument use.
- Provides project‑specific problem‑solving and ongoing support for imaging experiments and data analysis.
- Manages user schedules in ILabs and maintains training and usage records for billing purposes.
- Oversees day‑to‑day operations and performance of maintenance and upkeep of the facility.
- Mentors student researchers, postdoctoral researchers associates, and/or graduate students working on related projects.
- Prepares presentation materials on research topics for small or large groups.
- Participates in preparation of required technical progress reports to research sponsors.
