Job Description - Transportation Maintenance Tech I-II Brazos County (2600968)
Position OverviewTxDOT's Bryan District seeks a Transportation Maintenance Tech I or II based in Brazos County. The role involves routine transportation activities such as roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control and assisting the public during emergency situations. Driving a state vehicle is required.
Salary and Compensation- General Transportation Tech I: $40,918 - $61,130
- General Transportation Tech II: $42,976 - $64,469

Work Locations and ScheduleLocations:
Bryan, Brazos County; other locations: UST‑Texas‑Bryan. Travel:
Yes, 5% of time. Shift: Day, compressed Monday‑Thursday 7:00 am – 5:30 pm.
- Assist in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts, and perform basic welding as needed.
- Provide support to local law enforcement at accident sites and assist stranded motorists.
- Perform traffic control operations: place and gather cones, warning signs, barricades; flag traffic; determine placement and install/move devices; inspect barricades for compliance.
- Maintain highways, rights‑of‑way, and maintenance yards; perform roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
- Maintain picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, and comfort stations; move litter and roadway debris; mow rights‑of‑way and maintain landscape.
- Operate light equipment (front‑end loader, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, mower).
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, minor repairs on equipment; complete reports (timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI). Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs.
- Assist in inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Serve as the sole maintenance contract inspector on small projects.
- Inspect traffic control devices and placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, rules, regulations, and TMUTCD.
- Maintain construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; process related paperwork; review files for compliance with the Bridge Inspection Manual of Procedures.
- Perform skilled roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
- Operate heavy equipment (front‑end loader, tractor‑trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint stripper, dump truck).
- Identify, repair, and install signs, delineators, mailbox supports, posts; perform welding; use/move equipment, tools, materials.
- Inspect routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship.
- Identify, analyze, and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems.
- Inspect materials, equipment, and production procedures to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
- Work on a survey crew; operate survey instruments (theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, total station).
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Transportation Maintenance Tech I:
No experience required. - Transportation Maintenance Tech II: 1 year experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation or related work. Equivalent experience or technical training may substitute.
- Valid driver’s license; must drive a state vehicle. Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" CDL with "N" endorsement within XX days of employment.
- Military or veterans may obtain Texas Class "A" CDL within XX days of employment.
- Must have a Commercial Driver’s License.
