IT Field Comm Specialist II / II / Senior | Hub West

Summary: This role helps keep APS’s communication and technology infrastructure running reliably where it matters most—out in the field. As an IT Field Communications Specialist, you ensure critical technical assets are properly installed, maintained, and improved so services stay connected, even during emergencies. Your work directly supports APS’s mission by enabling fast restoration of services during outages or disasters, helping protect communities and keep power flowing safely and reliably.

What

Your Day Would Be Like:
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise communication and technical assets in the field to keep systems operating reliably
  • Identify design gaps during field work and develop practical redesigns or modifications to improve performance
  • Support disaster recovery efforts by helping redesign or reroute traffic to restore services quickly
  • Collaborate with internal teams and coordinate third‑party vendors when issues require escalation or specialized support
  • Take ownership of field challenges and turn them into solutions that strengthen APS’s technology network

IT Field Comm Specialist II | Hub West
  • Equivalent to a high school diploma
  • PLUS two (2) years related experience troubleshooting and repairing metering and control systems.
IT Field Comm Specialist III | Hub West
  • Equivalent to a high school diploma
  • PLUS five (5) years related experience troubleshooting and repairing metering and control systems.
IT Field Comm Specialist Senior | Hub West
  • Equivalent to a high school diploma
  • PLUS seven (7) years related experience troubleshooting and repairing metering and control systems.
Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or

Qualifications:
  • Proven experience working on all types of supervisory equipment used by APS.
  • Experience in designing, installing, configuring, and implementing public safety microwave radio systems and implementing large scale complex IP networks.
  • Knowledge of the functionality of control schematics.
  • Demonstrated experience in substation design concepts/practices relating to substation control.
  • Thorough understanding of protection, metering, and control concepts.
  • Familiarity with electronic circuit fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated personal computer skills including working knowledge of both hardware fundamentals and software applications. Ability to travel statewide, work outdoors, and work overtime.
  • Technical degree in telecommunication, data communications or equivalent.
  • Ability to interpret schematic diagrams and troubleshoot to component level.
  • Knowledge to transition to legacy communication to Next Generation Network and Radion equipment.
  • Specific knowledge of TCP/IP, network design, network security, propagation, and point to point radio operation using ethernet over microwave.
  • Knowledge of building IP networks using MPLS or other network convergence technologies.
  • Familiarity with FCC regulations and standards for licensing microwave paths. Understand basic electronics, electrical power systems, the basics of the 7 layers of the OSI model and in-depth knowledge and experience in RF.
  • Ability to coordinate and provide direct oversite to Vendor and 3rd part support and other activities within their area of responsibility (AOR).
  • Ability to train and mentor junior level staff and perform as SME of all equipment that resides within their AOR.
  • Ability to work 24/7 in support of Enterprise Network systems and Public Safety Communication Systems, including nights, weekends and holidays.
