Position: Registered Environmental Health Specialist (In-Training)

Company Description Crawford County Public Health (CCPH) has provided comprehensive public health services to Crawford County communities since 1919, including the City of Bucyrus. CCPH delivers a wide range of services such as food safety inspections, immunizations, home visits, nutrition education, and private well water sampling.

The organization focuses on improving community health, promoting healthy living, and protecting against public health threats through education, programs, policies, and partnerships. Staff members collaborate with local stakeholders to respond to community needs and support long-term public health outcomes.

Role Description The Registered Environmental Health Specialist (In-Training) is a full-time, on-site role located in Bucyrus, OH. This position supports environmental health programs by conducting inspections of food service operations, public swimming pools, private water systems, camps, and other regulated facilities under state and local health regulations. The specialist in training assists in investigating environmental health complaints, nuisance conditions, and potential public health hazards, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions.

Daily responsibilities include preparing reports, maintaining accurate records, and providing clear guidance and education to residents, businesses, and community partners on environmental health standards. The role also involves participating in outreach activities, collaborating with CCPH staff on environmental health initiatives, and engaging in ongoing training to meet Ohio requirements for full Registered Environmental Health Specialist credentialing.

Qualifications

  • Strong foundation in Environmental Health, including understanding of public health principles, environmental risk assessment, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge of Environment Health and Safety (EHS) practices, with the ability to apply safety standards in inspections and field investigations.
  • Skills in Environmental Compliance, including familiarity with state and local codes, enforcement procedures, and documentation of violations.
  • Experience or education in Occupational Health, with the ability to recognize workplace environmental hazards and support risk reduction strategies.
  • Effective Communication skills, including clear written reporting, professional verbal communication, and the ability to educate diverse community members.
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental health, public health, biology, chemistry, or a closely related field (or eligibility per Ohio REHS in-training requirements).
  • Ability to work on-site, conduct fieldwork in varied weather conditions, and safely travel to inspection sites within Crawford County.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple cases and inspections while meeting deadlines.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications for data entry, reporting, and documentation; willingness to learn CCPH systems and tools.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain Ohio Registered Environmental Health Specialist In-Training

Additional requirements: Candidates must hold a valid Ohio Driver’s license.

Starting salary: Dependent on qualifications.
