Job Responsibilities

  • Analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools.
  • Cut, shape, and trim blanks or blocks to specified lengths or shapes, using power saws, power shears, rules, and hand tools.
  • Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications; adjust as necessary.
  • Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
  • Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes. Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
  • Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe metal or plastic stock to lay out machining, using instruments such as protractors, micrometers, scribes, and rulers.
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); technical associate’s degree.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints of a technical nature, BOMs, and exhibit leadership capabilities; able to solve problems.
  • 3–6 years of work‑related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Language ability: read a limited number of two‑ and three‑syllable words; recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; print and speak simple sentences.
  • Math ability: add and subtract two‑digit numbers; multiply and divide with tens and hundreds; perform operations using units of American money and weight, volume, and distance.
  • Reasoning ability: apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions; handle problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Computer skills: knowledge of manufacturing software.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
Physical Demands

Lift and move up to 10 pounds occasionally; lift up to 35 pounds; push up to 30 pounds. Required vision includes close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception. Frequent hand and arm reaching, talking, and hearing. Must stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl frequently. Stooping/bending 20% of the time, reaching 20%, walking 25% of the time.

Also required to stand 100% and maintain hearing 100% of the time.

Additional Information

The salary rate for this role is currently $30–$35 per hour. The actual salary offered may be influenced by training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands, and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
