The ideal candidate must have a minimum of 1 year of experience in a veterinary assistant role, has strong customer service and communication skills and is proficient in web based applications. This individual is a self starter who also works well with a team. you are an independent thinker able to make communicate and execute a plan.

Position Summary

Reports to the Veterinary Clinic & Animal Services Supervisor. A Veterinary Assistant performs duties that may include medication of animals—preparation for surgical days, recovery, post-operative care, assisting the Vet team with procedures and surgery, and maintaining a clean and orderly workspace. Perform daily rounds of shelter animals (identifying health, wellness, medical, and enrichment needs) implementing resolution and a care plan in conjunction with vet services and animal care team members.

This role will also support intake (owner surrender/stray/transport).

This position is non-exempt 25‑30 hours/week including rotating weekends and some holidays $18.00/hour.

  • Experience with animal handling and restraint.
  • Adhering to standards of care by keeping animals safe, and keeping treatment areas and labs clean and organized.
  • Ability to efficiently communicate both written and verbally with members of the team.
  • Assist in the provision of medical and surgical care for animals in the shelter.
  • Takes inventory and assists in preparing orders.
  • Assist with cleaning the shelter and clinic and surgical pack preparation as assigned.
  • Must be able to recognize or learn to recognize characteristics of animal behavior.
  • Must be able to use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals.
  • Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and discretion - skilled at handling sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Work as a team player, supporting the overall goals and mission of the organization.
  • Committed to and contributes to a respectful workplace; seeks to understand people and situations.
  • Strong drive for results, while maintaining a calm approach to managing change and working through unexpected or challenging situations.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have a high level of resiliency.

Daily tasks to include:

  • Perform treatment and monitoring of animals.
  • Perform intake appointments and evaluation of animals in accordance with Crossroads process and procedures.
  • Work to ensure medical records are up to date and accurate.
  • Maintain inventory.
  • Complete weekly surgical roster.
  • Communicate with staff and foster volunteer in a timely manner to provide appropriate care to animals.
  • Be a good steward of information and resources. Listen, pay attention.

Support in all areas of the shelter and clinic in accordance with established procedures under the guidance of the veterinary team.
