Join the team at the City of Buffalo as a Liquor Store Clerk and help create a welcoming, positive experience for every customer who visits our store. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people in a fast-paced retail environment while delivering outstanding customer service.

Responsibilities include operating the point-of-sale (POS) system, processing and monitoring online customer orders, assisting guests with purchases and product questions, and supporting store management with daily operations as needed. The ideal candidate is dependable, customer-focused, and able to interact with guests in a professional, friendly, and helpful manner.

Examples of Duties

Operations Responsibilities

Greets customers and operates point of sale system to process purchases; collects money and provides correct change.

Checks patron's 's; refuses service if needed in accordance with store policy.

Assists the customer in carrying merchandise to their vehicles as needed.

Stocks shelves and coolers with wine, liquor, and beer.

Rotates stock, removes stock that is expiring, and identifies stocking needs.

Answers phones, provides information and assistance to callers, and takes messages for the manager.

Records requests for items not in stock and notes items that are running low; checks and marks stocks with correct prices and notifies the manager of pricing errors and UPC changes.

Recommends purchases including type, quantity and brand when requested by patrons; may recommend orders for assigned sections.

Assists in cleaning the store, including cleaning backroom, washing glass doors, cleaning windows, vacuuming, cleaning coolers and bathrooms, dusting shelves and merchandise.

Participates in physical inventory as needed.

Reports liquor-related violations to management staff or appropriate law enforcement agency.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Two (2) years of retail experience, or One (1) year of experience in off-sale liquor operation.
Must be 18 years or older.
Must have a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Supplemental Information

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of merchandise types, brands, and location within the store.
Knowledge of how to operate a cash register or point of sale system and make correct change.
Ability to use of a computer, cash register and calculator.
Ability to deal courteously with the public and provide good customer service.
Ability to use judgment, tact and discretion in sales based on age, state of inebriation, and/or possibility of fraudulent activity.
Ability to deal with difficult patrons and monitor operations to prevent and detect theft.
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
