Job Overview

Starting Wage: $29.34 per hour.

Night shift: 3:00 p.m.–11:30 p.m. November 1 – March 31. Day shift: 4:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. April 1 – October 31. The position performs intermediate skilled trades work maintaining traffic control signs and devices and the county’s highway road and bridge system.

Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Traffic Engineer or Highway Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions
  • Installs, repairs, fabricates, and maintains traffic control devices used in signing.
  • Performs traffic control, flagging, and work zone set‑ups.
  • Repairs and replaces signs damaged by traffic accidents or natural causes; documents and photographs repaired signs.
  • Assists supervisor in traffic studies and pavement striping.
  • Re‑lamps and performs minor maintenance on traffic signals and overhead lights; troubleshoots using computer hook‑up to cabinet and notifies contractors.
  • Trims trees and brush to improve visibility of signs.
  • Operates a locator device to check underground utilities before digging and assists in locating utilities.
  • Fabricates special signs not in regular inventory.
  • Maintains department equipment, buildings, field sign and sign shop inventories; uses computerized inventory system; documents all signing activities; receives and stores supplies.
  • Performs repairs and maintenance to roads and bridges (bituminous patching, paving, sealing concrete, crack sealing).
  • Replaces highway culverts and installs liners.
  • Places construction signs, removes debris, repairs or installs bridges, culverts and guardrails; constructs new roadway turn lanes and shoulders using computerized equipment.
  • Removes snow and ice with chemicals and salt; controls and removes noxious weeds and debris.
  • Transports and stockpiles road materials, including gravel and sand.
  • Operates heavy equipment safely on roadways and construction sites.
  • Interprets and understands highway construction plans.
  • Available for after‑work emergency callouts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED and at least two years of experience in highway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, and/or traffic signing, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience with metal fabrication is preferred.
Special Requirements
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement upon hire.
  • First Aid/CPR, Competent Person, Forklift, Nuclear, Flagger/Work Zone, OSHA Log Safe Training certificates within one year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Environmental safety awareness and proper signage knowledge.
  • Basic metal shop fabrication and mathematics for measurements and inventory.
  • Computer skills: standard office equipment, GPS, digital camera, automated inventory systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication; reading comprehension of work‑related documents and plans.
  • Interpersonal skills to work with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to operate sign truck with boom, tractor loader, distance measuring equipment, power and hand tools, welding equipment.
  • Compliance with safety practices involving traffic lanes, chemicals, and road maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of state and federal traffic control regulations.
  • Ability to learn road and bridge maintenance and signing procedures, ice and snow removal, and county workflows.
  • Time management and organization.
  • Record keeping and safety compliance.
Physical Requirements

Frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional up to 100 pounds of force; standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting, climbing; vision and hearing requirements; exposure to fumes, chemicals, weather, noise, vibration, and blood borne pathogens; requirement to wear personal protective equipment.
