The Science Academic Coach supports high school students in improving their academic performance by offering personalized individual or group tutoring sessions. Using their expertise, coaches help students understand classroom concepts, work through challenging problems, and enhance their overall academic skills. Coaching sessions are tailored to each student's unique needs, ensuring that the resources and strategies provided address their specific learning goals.
EssentialFunctions
- Provide subject-specific support to high school students.
- Recognize the different learning styles and resources needed for each student.
- Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.
- Use active listening strategies to allow students to determine content and pace of tutoring.
- Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to assess student needs and monitor progress.
- Participate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skills and continue to grow cultural competence and reflection skills.
- Participate in required training as assigned by the Director of College Prep Programming.
- Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice.
- Recognize the primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self‑directed learners.
- Be direct and kind with students at the same time.
- Utilize restorative practices when addressing challenges.
- Communicate student concerns or challenges to the Director of College Prep Programming in a timely manner.
- Attend department and all staff meetings and trainings as assigned.
- Must be available to work Monday‑Thursday between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. during the academic year (September‑June).
- Available to work occasional weekends for professional development and training.
- Understands and adheres to Buffalo Prep’s Stop Light Policy, and mandated reporting policy outlined by NYS Office of Child and Family Services.
- Attend ongoing professional development that enhances learning for the role, department, organizational mission, initiatives, and culture.
- Additional duties as assigned by management.
- Bachelor’s degree or actively pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in science‑related fields is required;
Master’s degree preferred. - Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
