Hourly Salary: $19.27 – Level I Teaching Assistant Certification or Initial TA Certificate; $19.53 – Level II; $20.41 – Level III

Rate of pay subject to increase based on settlement of CBA.

Position Summary

Erie 1 BOCES seeks Teacher Assistants for the Maryvale Academy Regents Program. The Teacher Assistant will work alongside Administration, Teachers, and Support Staff to support 8th‑12th grade Academic Students.

Job Responsibilities

The Teaching Assistant provides direct instructional services to students under the general supervision of a certified teacher. They support the teacher by helping to supervise activities in the classroom, working with students individually, in small groups, or whole class basis. They may also be assigned additional responsibilities such as teaching classes independently, covering planned absences, managing other support staff, and assisting with recording student grades, data, and reporting on student progress.

Duties require knowledge of child development and interpersonal skills to coordinate instruction with the primary teachers and communicate with parents.

  • Supporting students across the curriculum.
  • Working with individual students as directed by teacher.
  • Assisting the teacher with marking and correcting work.
  • Assisting with school events, trips and other activities.
  • Assisting in classroom behavior management.
  • Assisting with routine classroom functioning.
  • Accompanying students when removal from a classroom is necessary or when the students must go to another part of the building.
  • Assisting in restraining students who may exhibit behaviors that are injurious to self or others.
  • Assisting and supervising games and free play, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Assisting teacher in the implementation of activities that include but are not limited to feeding, lifting, toileting, and other activities of daily living (e.g., grooming, hygiene, leisure/recreation, etc.).
  • Lifting and transporting students in conjunction with daily living activities.
    • Assistant working with non-ambulatory students are expected to lift 40-pound loads independently and may be required to lift/move students weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance from another adult and/or with the use of appropriate lifting devices.
    • Special note:
      Ability to lift/move students either independently or with assistance is a condition of employment for teaching assistants who work with non-ambulatory students. Initial and periodic physical examinations will test this ability. Assistants should not attempt to lift more than one-third of their body weight without assistance from another adult or appropriate lifting devices.
  • Maintaining working knowledge and ability to implement classroom and school wide safety plans.
  • Discussing parental requests for information with the teacher before responding.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of student information.
  • Assuming teacher responsibilities in the absence of the classroom teacher or as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    • Valid NYS Teaching Assistant Certification – Level I, II, III or Initial TA.
    • Experience working with high school-based Regents curriculum and students.
