Job Description:
Erie 1 BOCES seeks Classroom Teacher Aides for 8th–12th grade Regents-based program; working with 6:1:1 or 8:1:1 Exceptional Education Students.
- Assists with classroom activities as directed by the teacher.
- Works with individual children as directed by a teacher.
- Assists children with arrival and departure involving coats, boots, and lunches.
- Helps keep supplies and materials in order.
- Helps prepare materials for their use.
- Cleans up and puts away materials after use.
- Changes children's clothing and cleanses children, if necessary.
- Assists the teacher in implementing the classroom and/or individual student's behavior management program.
- Accompanies a child when removal from a classroom is necessary or when the child must go to another part of the building.
- Assists in restraining students who may exhibit behaviors that are injurious to self or others.
- Assists and supervises games and free play, both indoors and outdoors.
- Assists the teacher in the implementation of activities that include but are not limited to feeding, toileting, and other activities of daily living (e.g., grooming, hygiene, leisure/recreation, etc.).
- Lifts and transports students in conjunction with daily living activities.
- Teacher Aides working with non-ambulatory students are expected to lift 40-pound loads independently and may be required to lift/move students weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance from another adult and/or with the use of appropriate lifting devices.
- Special note:
The ability to lift/move students either independently or with assistance is a condition of employment for teacher aides who work with non-ambulatory students. Initial and periodic physical examinations will test this ability. Teacher aides should not attempt to lift more than one-third of their body weight without assistance from another adult or appropriate lifting devices. - Be an active part of the classroom education team, following teacher directions, being cooperative, showing support for other team members, and focusing on student needs and outcomes.
- Discuss parental requests for information with the teacher before responding.
- Maintains confidentiality of student information.
Civil Service
Title:
Teacher Aide
- A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; or;
- B) Four (4) years of experience and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved, not necessarily in an aide role; or;
- C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
- Previous experience with Academic Exceptional Education High School Students preferred.
