7-12 Spanish Foreign Language Teacher

The 7-12
Spanish Teacher designs and delivers foundational world language instruction aligned with the NYS Learning Standards for World Languages (Anchor Standards: Communication and Cultures). The teacher guides elementary and middle school students through target language acquisition, focusing on the three modes of communication (Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational) and age-appropriate cultural exploration. The Spanish teacher fosters an inclusive, culturally responsive environment that supports all learners, including students with disabilities and Multilingual Learners, building early linguistic confidence and equipping students with the communication skills necessary to pass NYS Checkpoint A requirements and transition successfully into high school language study.

Duties & Responsibilities Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment
  • Standards-Aligned Instruction:
    Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate Spanish lessons aligned with the NYS Learning Standards for World Languages (Checkpoint A focus).
  • Target Language Immersion:
    Deliver comprehensible, immersive instruction using TPR (Total Physical Response), visual aids, songs, storytelling, and interactive activities to build listening and speaking skills in young learners.
  • Cultural Integration:
    Introduce students to the diverse traditions, geography, music, and perspectives of Spanish-speaking cultures to build early global awareness.
  • Assessment & Growth:
    Use formative assessments, performance tasks, and progress monitoring to track language acquisition and prepare 8th-grade students for NYS Checkpoint A proficiency exams or local equivalencies.
Professional Collaboration & Communication
  • Family Engagement:
    Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student growth, language benchmarks, and cultural projects.
  • Vertical Alignment:
    Collaborate with elementary classroom teachers, middle school teams, and high school language staff to ensure a seamless K-12 language sequence.
  • School & Community Culture:
    Participate in school-wide events, grade-level meetings, and cultural celebrations (e.g., Hispanic Heritage Month showcases, language fairs).
Education & Certification
  • Education:

    Bachelor's or Master's degree in Spanish, Foreign Language Education, Spanish Language & Literature, or a related field.
  • Certification:
    Valid state teaching credential with an endorsement or certification in Spanish / World Languages (Grades 7-12).
Experience
  • Minimum of [2-5] years of successful classroom teaching experience in Middle/High School Spanish, with a proven track record of advancing language acquisition and student learning outcomes.
Technical Skills Data & Assessment Systems
  • Experienced in tracking student proficiency levels and benchmark growth using student information systems (SIS) and data platforms (e.g., Power School, Infinite Campus, NWEA MAP, or AAPPL/STAMP language proficiency assessments).
Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • Skilled in managing instructional workflows, digital immersion resources, and interactive language assignments via Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology.
Collaboration & Reporting Tools
  • Proficient in productivity suites (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office) and digital language learning tools (e.g., Quizlet, Kahoot!, Formative) for tracking performance, managing grading workflows, and reporting student progress.
Skills & Competencies
  • Language Proficiency:
    Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English (oral, written, and reading comprehension).
  • Instructional Practice:
    Strong grasp of ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency guidelines, comprehensible input strategies, and communicative language teaching methodologies.
