Overview

Ferguson Electric’s Electrical Engineer II is a mid‑level position focused on becoming self‑sufficient in design and engineering tasks. The role contributes to electrical system design, engineering, commissioning and construction efforts for commercial and industrial projects, including healthcare, education, research, commercial facilities, and utilities. Responsibilities include supporting project design teams, developing innovative solutions, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards, and providing guidance to junior staff.

Responsibilities
  • Electrical Systems Design
    • Design power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, communication systems for commercial and industrial projects.
    • Develop project design goals, specifications and strategies to meet client requirements.
    • Conduct quality control reviews of engineering documents for accuracy and compliance.
    • Ensure designs comply with codes (NFPA, IEEE) and industry standards.
  • Electrical Systems Analysis & Field Support
    • Specify electrical equipment, components, and materials; ensure compatibility with project needs and budgets.
    • Perform engineering studies (load analysis, short‑circuit, coordination, arc flash) using tools such as SKM or Easypower.
    • Review submittals, shop drawings and construction documents.
    • Develop relay, transformer, breaker and battery testing plans and reports.
    • Provide support to service technicians troubleshooting customer electrical system problems.
  • Project Leadership
    • Coordinate electrical engineering aspects, ensuring adherence to budgets, schedules and quality standards.
    • Participate in project team and client meetings to align on scope, progress and deliverables.
    • Assist in preparing construction documents.
  • Site Engagement
    • Attend job‑site visits to observe existing conditions and monitor construction progress.
    • Provide technical support to field teams and subcontractors.
    • Perform physical walk‑throughs to assess conditions and resolve issues.
  • Process Improvement
    • Develop strategies to improve design quality, coordination and efficiency.
    • Support incorporation of renewable and sustainable design practices where applicable.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • Education & Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Architectural Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (required).
    • 4‑6 years of electrical engineering experience on commercial or industrial projects.
    • Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification required or 5‑years direct experience.
  • Technical Skills
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Experience with drawing software (Revit, AutoCAD) and electrical analysis software (SKM).
    • Understanding of NEC, IEEE and other relevant codes for power distribution, lighting and communication systems.
    • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications.
    • Basic knowledge of electrical system installation methods and standards.
    • Exposure to renewable energy or sustainable design practices a plus.
