The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and coordinating the technical design and delivery of energy upgrades for multifamily real estate assets, with a focus on reducing carbon emissions while improving building performance and resident comfort. This role owns the end-to-end engineering of retrofit projects, including geothermal heating and cooling systems, electrical and plumbing upgrades, on-site energy generation and storage, EV charging infrastructure, building envelope improvements, and full or partial building electrification.
The Engineering Manager partners closely with Development, Construction, and external engineering consultants to evaluate existing conditions, develop integrated upgrade strategies, manage technical risk, and ensure designs are cost-effective, code-compliant, and aligned with Good Carbon’s sustainability and investment objectives. This is a hands‑on role combining direct technical contribution with people leadership and project coordination.
What you’ll do- Lead engineering execution across retrofit projects from feasibility through construction, ensuring code compliance, constructability, budget alignment, and sustainability outcomes
- Provide technical leadership across mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, ensuring integrated, high-performance designs
- Own development and review of engineering drawings, schematics, specifications, and documentation using AutoCAD/Revit/BIM tools
- Lead design and coordination for geothermal systems, solar PV, battery storage, EV charging, and electrification initiatives
- Collaborate with architects, contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders to refine designs and manage technical risk
- Conduct feasibility studies, technical assessments, and cost analyses to evaluate design alternatives and inform decision‑making
- Support Development and Construction teams to ensure design intent is accurately executed in the field and resolve engineering issues during construction
- Drive disciplined engineering processes, documentation standards, and design review practices
- Manage and develop engineering team members, guiding structured decision‑making and accountability
- Represent Engineering in cross‑functional discussions and support Product with R&D and new product introductions
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering required;
Electrical Engineering preferred - Professional Engineer (PE) license required;
New York State licensure preferred or ability to obtain within 6–12 months - 5+ years of engineering experience in building systems design, construction, or real estate development, including at least 3 years in a leadership role with hands‑on technical responsibility
- Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary building systems projects from concept through construction
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, and engineering analysis tools
- Strong knowledge of building codes, permitting processes, and industry standards
- Demonstrated expertise in MEP system design, including HVAC, electrical distribution, plumbing systems, and construction documentation
- Familiarity with HVAC manuals, design standards, and best practices for multifamily and mixed‑use buildings
- Experience coordinating geothermal systems, solar PV, battery storage, and EV charging within retrofit and electrification projects
- Strong understanding of high-performance, sustainable building systems, decarbonization strategies, and lifecycle analysis
- Proven ability to lead and develop engineering talent
- Skilled at collaborating across architects, consultants, construction teams, and internal stakeholders to drive integrated outcomes
