Responsibilities
As a Professional Engineer 1 (Civil/Transportation), you will perform professional engineering duties for projects involving new or rehabilitated roads, bridges, railroads, airport structures, materials, waterways, and roads. You will select the most efficient plan of work from a variety of alternatives, recommend construction or rehabilitation projects, determine sequencing of project phases, review and approve estimates, specifications, reports, and contract changes throughout the project life cycle, and provide technical advice to engineers, legal staff, consultants, and budget representatives on financial, structural, or construction requirements.
You may also serve in the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
- New York State Professional Engineer license and current registration.
- Either a qualifying bachelor’s degree or higher in one of the following disciplines:
- Civil Engineering
- Civil Engineering Technology
- Construction Engineering
- Construction Engineering Technology
- Construction Engineering Management
- Construction Engineering Management Technology
- Geological Engineering
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Hydraulics Engineering
- Materials Engineering
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
- Structural Engineering
- Transportation Engineering
- Transportation Planning and Engineering
- Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees
- Or one year of full‑time qualifying engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems.
- For promotional candidates: must be a qualified employee of New York State, have a professional engineer license, and have at least one year of permanent competitive or 55‑b/55‑c service as an Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation).
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Candidates may be appointed through NY HELPS or competitively. For the duration of the NY HELPS program, the position may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment, and qualified employees will later convert to competitive status.
SalaryBase salary: $91,298. Total compensation ranges from $98,298 to $122,252, including a $7,000 geographic pay differential and potential Mid‑Hudson or Downstate adjustments.
