Overview

Primary Responsibilities
  • Perform quality monitoring reviews on individual loans and targeted portfolios. Independently complete reviews and provide feedback in accordance with established operational procedures and timelines.
  • Review and validate the accuracy of individual risk ratings, completeness of the credit file, and/or adherence to policies for loans reviewed.
  • Ensure underwriting and credit analyses are sound and appropriately justify and/or mitigate credit risk.
  • Analyze and understand financial data, collateral documentation and other credit monitoring functions. This process includes analyzing financial data and collateral documentation to determine the borrower’s cash flow and ability to repay debt and gauging the quality and collectability of collateral.
  • Provide guidance to Commercial Credit teams more complex loan relationships.
  • Communicate regularly with Commercial Credit management regarding quality monitoring/assurance reviews.
  • Prepare written documentation and/or reports and elevate material findings to the Commercial Credit Quality Monitoring Manager.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned and perform additional duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities

The Commercial Credit Quality Monitoring team operates within the Commercial Credit organization (1st line of defense) to promote timely oversight of credit quality, continuous credit monitoring functions and risk mitigation across the commercial lending portfolio. This role is designed to strengthen credit disciple, enhances portfolio risk outcomes and influences a strong credit culture. The team partners directly with the Commercial Credit teams to enhance credit quality, strengthen controls and drive continuous improvement across the commercial lending lifecycle.

Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities

Act as a subject matter expert to provide coaching and mentoring to the staff.

Independently work with Commercial Credit Leadership to identify credit risks and contribute meaningful solutions for improvement and consistency.

Input into the development of and training of junior/newly hired team members.

Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in a business-related curriculum and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in commercial or consumer credit, lending, residential mortgage, finance, accounting, audit and/or other relevant experience or 9 years’ higher education and/or working experience, including 5 years’ experience in commercial or consumer credit, lending, residential mortgage, finance, accounting, audit, and or other relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of credit risk management techniques, credit regulatory guidance, and bank credit administration.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience with spreadsheet, word processing, presentation and database software.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize to complete work within established time frames.
Education and Experience Preferred

MBA / Advanced Degree or a CPA.

Experience with Capital IQ, Fact Set, and Bloomberg
