Fair Housing Officer

The Fair Housing Officer directs all activities of the City of Buffalo's Fair Housing Office, with principal responsibility for implementing the City's fair housing strategy as required under Title VIII of the Federal Fair Housing Act. Incumbents exercise wide latitude and independent decision-making as to scope and planning of various projects, however this position does not include supervisory duties.

Examples of work (Illustration Only)

• Responsible for direct community engagement via constant communication with landlord and tenant, attending fair housing court as required;
• Conducts on-site visits to ensure compliance with all applicable Fair Housing Regulations;
• Provides education and outreach on fair housing and landlord/tenant law through training, technical assistance and publications, including dissemination of information relating to fair housing laws;
• Compiles fair housing information and make it available to interested parties;
• Implements the city's fair housing strategy;
• Assist in developing a strategy to overcome barriers to fair housing laws;
• Acts as liaison and monitors and evaluates activities of contracted third-party service providers between the City of Buffalo and Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo and Legal Services for the Elderly;
• Acts as liaison between the City of Buffalo and community groups/individuals involved in fair housing activities;
• Analyzes and evaluates local matters pertaining to fair housing which are of concern to the City of Buffalo and community groups/individuals involved in fair housing programs/subsidies;
• Creatively promotes fair housing education and rental education to residents throughout our community;
• Conducts participant recruitment, assessment, and referral;
• Engages, on a regular basis by phone, email and in person with Landlords and Tenants;
• Prepares necessary reports on matters relating to fair housing policy and activities and analyzes and evaluates implications on Federal and State law and policy;
• Develops and maintains computerized system to track performance of program;
• Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

(A) Bachelor's Degree from a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education, and two years of full-time qualifying experience*;

OR

(B) Associate's Degree from a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education, and four years of full-time qualifying experience*;

OR

(C) An equivalent combination as defined within the limits of A and B above.

* QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE Must be experience in reviewing grant application and administration or management of employment and training programs and familiarity with equal employment opportunity and woman/minority business enterprise programs.

NOTE:

Verifiable part-time or volunteer experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.
