Duties Description The position of Fire Safety Representative is essential to the Regional Office's ability to guarantee the safety and well-being of children in adoption programs, children in foster care in residential placement and children and families who are victims of domestic violence. The Regional Office is responsible for making sure that the local Department of Social Services in each county of their region is in compliance with NYS mandates governing child protection.

This position provides fire safety field services to Congregate Care facilities and Residential Programs for victims of Domestic Violence as part of a team that includes other program representatives and ensures that these facilities are in compliance with applicable safety codes, regulations, and other state and local requirements. This position is responsible to conduct safety inspections, compile reports detailing findings and recommendations, and review evacuation plans to determine the ability of facilities to respond to fire and other emergencies.

In addition, the position needs to establish working relationships with local safety authorities in inspection of facilities, investigation of fires, and other areas involving dual jurisdiction. The position may be required to conduct training in safety awareness and regulatory requirements and provide testimony at administrative hearings.

Minimum Qualifications Transfer:
One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in this title.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
* To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications for the full SG 18 level are:

Either
1. Five years of full-time active service in a professional fire department or industrial fire brigade (including members of the military who spent their service time performing firefighting and fire protection activities) WHICH INCLUDES two years of experience as the person primarily responsible for fire prevention, fire inspection, or fire training programs;

Or 2. Eight years of active service in a volunteer fire department WHICH INCLUDES two years of experience as the person primarily assigned and responsible for fire prevention, fire inspection, or fire training programs, AND the successful completion of six fire safety courses offered by the State Office of Fire Prevention and Control or a verifiable equivalent. Five of these courses must include:
Firefighter 1 or Basic Firefighter and Intermediate Firefighter or equivalent;
Introduction to Code Enforcement Practices Part 1;
Introduction to Code Enforcement Practices Part II; and Inspection Procedures for Existing Structures;
