Overview

Summary:

Working within the context of an interdisciplinary team setting, assigns ICD-10-CM diagnostic and CPT-4 procedure codes as appropriate for including but not limited to Primary Care, Radiology, Laboratory medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine, General Surgery, Gastroenterology, Ophthalmology, Rheumatology, Gerontology, Orthopedic Surgery, Physical and Occupational Therapy for the purpose of accurate reimbursement, research, and compliance with all applicable regulations. Diagnoses and procedures are coded utilizing International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and Current Procedure Terminology (CPT) classifications.

Mentor Junior Medical Coders as necessary.

Responsibilities
  • EDUCATION
  • Active coding certification CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPMA or COC From AAPC or AHIMA
  • Candidates are required to take and successfully pass HCS coding test
Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years professional coding experience required
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) or practice management systems preferred
  • Maintains credentials by meeting AHIMA/ AAPC continuing education requirements
  • Epic and Medent experience preferred
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
  • Independent worker, able to solve problems and troubleshoot
  • Thorough knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding systems, medical terminology, and anatomy & physiology
  • Must possess good communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships and to work productively with all levels of personnel including Clinicians and staff
  • Client focused
  • Accountability and results oriented
Working Conditions
  • Individual works in a hybrid office setting utilizing medical records, computers, electronic encoders, and reference books to assign appropriate codes for accurate reimbursement
  • NYS Driver's license or transportation is required for occasional travel
Environment
  • Normal heat, light space, and safe working environment; typical of most office jobs
