About the Position

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in an Outpatient setting provides nursing care to patients in medical offices, clinics, or outpatient surgery centers. LPNs in outpatient settings perform a variety of tasks such as assisting physicians during exams, administering medications, educating patients, and ensuring smooth patient flow through the facility. This role is focused on supporting patients who are not admitted to the hospital but require medical attention, follow-up care, or routine procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patient Care
    :

    • Take and record vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, weight, pulse, respiration).
    • Assist patients with physical exams and procedures under the direction of the physician or healthcare provider.
    • Provide basic nursing care such as wound care, dressing changes, and assisting with minor medical procedures.
    • Administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, injections) and monitor patients for adverse reactions.
    • Collect laboratory specimens (e.g., blood, urine, swabs) for testing, ensuring proper labeling and handling.
  • Patient Education
    :

    • Educate patients on their conditions, treatment plans, medications, and preventive care measures.
    • Provide instructions for home care and post-treatment care, including the use of medical equipment, wound care, and medication management.
    • Answer patient questions and concerns, offering reassurance and guidance in a calm and empathetic manner.
  • Administrative Support
    :

    • Assist in maintaining patient records, ensuring they are accurate, up-to-date, and compliant with privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA).
    • Schedule patient appointments, follow-up visits, and assist in coordinating care between different healthcare providers.
    • Handle basic office tasks, such as answering phones, managing patient flow, and verifying insurance information.
    • Ensure that patient charts are prepared and ready for each appointment and update patient files with vital information.
  • Assisting with Procedures
    :

    • Prepare patients for routine medical procedures, such as blood draws, X-rays, EKGs, or minor surgeries.
    • Set up examination rooms and medical equipment, ensuring they are sterile and properly functioning.
    • Assist the healthcare provider during patient exams or minor surgeries by providing instruments, supplies, or other necessary support.
  • Infection Control and Safety
    :

    • Follow strict infection control procedures, including sterilization of medical instruments and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment in the clinic or office.
    • Monitor patients for any signs of infection or complications following a procedure or treatment.
  • Collaboration and Communication
    :

    • Work closely with physicians, registered nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
    • Communicate effectively with patients, family members, and the healthcare team regarding treatment plans and patient status.
    • Report any changes in patient conditions or concerns to the supervising physician or registered nurse promptly.
  • Emergency Response
    :

    • Be prepared to handle medical emergencies in the outpatient setting, including performing CPR, administering first aid, or stabilizing patients until further medical help arrives.
    • Respond quickly and appropriately to sudden changes in patient conditions, ensuring patient safety at all times.
