Lead School Nurse (Victory Academy at Nelson) Job Description

Victory Academy at Nelson is seeking a dedicated Lead School Nurse to provide exceptional care, promote wellness, and create a safe, nurturing environment for our students and staff. Victory Academy offers specialized, individualized educational services for youth residing on our campus, supporting youth ages 11 to 21 from all over Western New York. We bridge the gap with RTF treatment teams to ensure we provide a person‑centered, trauma‑informed learning environment.

Job Summary

The Lead School Registered Nurse is an integral part of the OLV Human Services School Age programs in supporting an optimum physical, mental, emotional and social climate for all students and staff. The lead school nurse acts as an educator, advocate, liaison and consultant on health related issues for students, families and school personnel. As the Lead School RN, this person is responsible for Nelson School directly, filling in at other sites as needed, and providing clinical support and supervision to other School Nurses.

Responsibilities
  • Perform daily school nursing duties at the Nelson School.
    • Maintain student medical documentation
    • Pass student medications
    • Monitor student medical needs in the school setting
    • Collaborate with the Residential Campus regarding students
  • Clinically lead and support the School Nurse Team at OLV Human Services
  • Train School Nurses on medical related job duties, such as: restraint documentation, student record keeping, agency nursing policies and school health policies.
  • Act as substitute nurse as needed during times of need at other Education sites due to nurse absence.
  • Monitor and document physical restraints.
  • In collaboration with the Building Leadership Teams, review and revise school health policies included in the parent handbook annually
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Requires the ability to utilize computer systems and software necessary to perform position functions.
  • Requires effective oral/written communication and interpersonal skills for interactions with various individuals both internal and external to the program. Must be able to deal tactfully and effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Significant problem solving and diagnostic skills with the ability to quickly analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Ability to handle stressful and sensitive situations in a professional manner.
Qualifications

AAS/BSN Degree from an accredited Nursing School

Minimum Experience Required

3-5 Years of Experience

License/Registration/ Certifications Required
  • RN Licensure
Training Requirements
  • TCI
    - Observation
  • CPR
Physical Requirements

The overall nature of the position is sedentary requiring little physical effort with occasional light physical exertion required. There is little, if any, exposure to environmental conditions.

  • Constant physical demand of the position is sitting.
  • Frequent physical demands: standing, walking, climbing, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and eye/hand/foot coordination.
