Job DescriptionThe Registered Nurse in the Obstetrical Department delivers direct patient care utilizing the Nursing Process to patients with obstetrical and neonatal health needs. He or she collaborates with other health professionals in coordinating patient care and provides direction to non-licensed personnel within the department. The RN lactation consultant applies the nursing process in the care of the breastfeeding mother and infant, focusing on clinical assessment, support of lactation needs, encouragement, education, and consultation.
The RN lactation consultant possesses professional knowledge of the breastfeeding process, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum healthcare and psychosocial issues, knowledge of premature infants and newborns to toddlers, and expertise in breastfeeding care and educational principles, practices, procedures, and techniques required to assess learning needs, develop an educational plan, teach and counsel staff, patients and family members, and evaluate the effectiveness of instruction.
and Credentials
Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BLS certification required upon hire and maintained thereafter. Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing or specialty certification required; if absent upon hire or transfer, must be obtained within three (3) years. American Academy of Pediatric NRP certification required within one year and maintained thereafter. Registered Nurse certification required upon hire. IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is the first preference;
if absent upon bidding, must be obtained within two years of hire/transfer and remain current. If IBCLC is absent upon bidding, CLC (Certified Lactation Counselor) is the second preference.
One (1) year of experience in an RN position in Mother-Baby, Lactation, NICU, or Labor & Delivery within the past three (3) years required.
Internal Applicant RequirementsFor registered nurse clinical positions, internal applicants must have been employed in the same job title as the per diem position or in a comparable area of practice. Internal applicants must have a minimum of nine (9) continuous months of comparable work experience within two (2) years of the posting date. External applicants must have a minimum of one (1) continuous year of comparable work experience within two (2) years of the posting date.
All applicants must satisfy all orientation and probationary requirements.
