Licensed Veterinary Technician

Veterinary Technicians assist with treatments, computerize all transactions, maintain inventory, monitor hospitalized pets, run routine in-house lab work, send lab work out, and provide education to clients, as well as prepare, assist and monitor all surgical patients and procedures. This is an overview of the position. Duties are not limited to those listed here.

Major Duties:

* Assist in exam rooms by obtaining weight, vital signs and brief history. Enter charges into patient's history and prepare any needed prescriptions. Do routine suture removals and nail trims.

* Provide basic client education, including discussing dog/cat care, parasites, vaccines, wellness blood work and nutrition.

* Perform any treatments requested by doctor. Enter all services rendered in patient's invoice.

* Have supplies prepared for exams and appointments.

* Specimen collection.

* Properly label, enter charges and perform fecal tests, heartworm tests, urinalyses, antibody/antigen tests, CBCs, chemistry profiles, gram stains etc., as needed. Keep track of tests run in Laboratory Log and on the client's account. Enter results in computer. Keep area clean.

* Monitor lab supplies and have all forms and tubes labeled for any scheduled blood work. Send out appropriate lab work. Keep track of tests sent in logbook. Review lab statements to make sure that all charges have been applied to clients.

* Perform indicated maintenance on lab equipment.

* Enter fees into the computer for surgery/hospitalized patients. Call owners to update them on their pet's status.

* Perform and assist in dental procedures.

* Make estimates for procedures and review them with owner.

* Review the surgery/procedure schedule with the surgery DVM and staff to determine the best order for the day.

* Prepare all necessary instruments and equipment needed for surgeries/procedures.

* Prepare anesthesia according to pet's weight and needs. Have anesthetic machine ready and in proper working order, along with endotracheal tube, if needed.

* Assist doctor with surgical procedures in addition to cleaning ears and trimming nails.

* Clean pets following surgery, give injections as necessary. Check record to see if anything else is needed while pet is in the hospital.

* Monitor pet throughout recovery.

* Prepare for next surgery until all are completed and all patients have recovered.

* Keep a log of all controlled substances used and record those appropriately.

* Assist in taking, developing, and maintaining x-rays as needed. Digitally send them out to radiograph consultant if indicated by DVM.

* Maintain all anesthetic machines, autoclave, and any other equipment used in surgery..

* Maintain pet records by recording all conversations with clients and any work done in computer. Work closely with doctors and follow up on additional work needed.

* Prepare any prescriptions that need to be dispensed. Continually monitor pharmacy refill requests. Explain to clients how to give the medication. Hand out appropriate forms.

* Admit and release/discharge hospitalized patients and boarders.

* Inventory control: keep track of supplies, record item in reorder notebook for Lead LVT to order or tell her immediately if out of a particular supply. Help monitor expiration dates.

* Help keep hospital clean and orderly.

* Promote and make use of the company website and Facebook accessibility by updating announcements, if you have been made responsible for this task.

* Notify the Lead Technician or Hospital Manager if any equipment stops functioning optimally.

* Perform any other duties requested by the doctor or hospital manager. Assist owners or other staff members when needed.

* Compensation

* Base hourly rate of $21.00 - $25.00 DOE
