The Ecological and Habitat Assessment Services unit is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, self-reliant temporary Technical Assistant. This is a field-based position that focuses on fisheries surveys and habitat inventory. As a Technical Assistant, you will have the opportunity to gain experience in species-at-risk conservation, management-based research, and applied ecological monitoring while working on the different research components of the project.
Under the supervision of the Senior Ecologist Instream Flow Assessment you will conduct Bigmouth Buffalo and Common Carp assessments across Southern Saskatchewan (Qu’Appelle River System). Duties and responsibilities of this project include but are not limited to: capturing fish, collecting and recording biological information, habitat assessments, collection of water quality data, operation and maintenance of data collection equipment, landowner contacts, vehicle and boat maintenance, and data recording, input and analysis.
The Technical Assistant will have the opportunity to contribute to critical data collection of Bigmouth Buffalo and Common Carp population age structures, recruitment, distribution, and assess competition with Common Carp and potential impacts from water management. Other tasks may include participation in other ongoing fisheries research projects and fish salvages across the province as well.
