Serves as a Health Physicist and technical lead for the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP). Will provide expert advisory and planning services on complex health physics issues, ensuring the protection of people and the environment from ionizing radiation. To include planning and directing radiation surveys, and providing technical direction on regulatory compliance with agencies like the NRC and EPA.

• DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT/DUTIES:
• Serves as a Health Physics technical lead for the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP), providing expertise, advisory and planning services.
• Provides technical direction and advice to professionals by reviewing and studying proposals for CERCLA-related documents, including remedial investigations, feasibility studies, and health and safety plans.
• Plans, organizes, and either conducts or directs radiation surveys within Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) sites, which includes field measurements, wipe tests, and laboratory analysis.
• Investigates cases of excess radiation exposure and incidents of deviation from the proper control of radioactive material, reporting findings and recommending corrective actions.
• Develops and evaluates programs to ensure personal exposure to radiation is as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).

  This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD, Section 9905 to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

  QUALIFICATIONS:

• Basic Requirement (

• Degree:
  Bachelor’s degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

  Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education.

• Certification:
  Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph

• In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirement listed below:
• Experience Requirement:
• Specialized Experience GS-11 Level: One year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service which includes:
  Applying health physics principles to assist in the evaluation of radiological problems or programs. Assisting in the review of documents such as safety plans or survey results for compliance with established radiological standards and guidelines. Participating in radiation protection surveys, which may include collecting field measurements, wipe tests, or environmental samples. Assisting in investigation of incidents involving potential radiation exposure or the release of radioactive materials.
