Service & Repair Mechanic (HVAC-R), Residential Maintenance Services
Position SummaryWe are hiring a full‑time Service & Repair Mechanic (HVAC‑R) within Residential Maintenance Services. In this role you will ensure that HVAC equipment is installed correctly, properly maintained, and repaired as needed across UB’s North and South campuses. You will work with a team of dynamic individuals in a residential setting that serves up to 7,500 students.
Responsibilities- Supervise and train designated staff as applicable.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and replace compressors, pumps, and electric motors.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust, and replace parts and controls to include Building Management Systems.
- Install and maintain equipment.
- Operate and perform repairs on refrigeration and air‑conditioning equipment.
- Inspect and troubleshoot equipment for leaks and electrical or mechanical failures.
- Successful completion of a NYS two‑year Service & Repair Mechanic (HVAC‑R) Traineeship or NYS two‑year refrigeration repair and maintenance training program.
- Or successful completion of any equivalent refrigeration two‑year training or apprenticeship program.
- Or four (4) years of full‑time experience in the mechanical or electrical trades under a skilled journey‑level mechanic or electrician, with one (1) year of training and work in the operation and maintenance of commercial‑type refrigeration or air‑conditioning equipment.
- Apprenticeship training in the mechanical or electrical trades or training gained by completion of technical courses in the mechanical or electrical trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.
- * Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade‑specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on‑the‑job training.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience working in a college or university residential setting.
- The ability to respond to after‑hours service calls.
- Frequently moves machinery and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across campus.
- Occasionally moves about inside tight spaces to access or serve machinery.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50 percent of the time.
- Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder to service equipment.
