Position: ELECTRICIAN (PROVISIONAL) (WATER)

Job Overview

Skilled work responsible for efficient and workmanlike performance in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical wiring, equipment, and devices across various public works settings, including bridges, traffic signals, and educational facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain, and repair wiring and lighting systems, including conduits and cables
  • Maintain and repair generating equipment such as turbo‑generators, exciters, field rheostats, and voltage regulators
  • Maintain and repair circuit breakers, transformers, buses, and other electrical equipment and appliances
  • Maintain and repair motors, draft fans, heating and ventilating equipment
  • Maintain and repair lighting circuits and lighting fixtures
  • Inspect electrical controls in heating systems
  • Re‑route high‑voltage power through a "Loop" system
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems during power failures or crisis situations
  • Make minor repairs to computer installations and status monitoring systems
  • Requisition necessary materials and supplies
  • Drive to and from work sites and vendor locations
  • Perform related work as required
Traffic Section Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot solid‑state, electrical, and mechanical auxiliary traffic signal equipment
  • Remove causes of grounds, opens, and shorts
  • Repair malfunctioning traffic signals and signal controllers
  • Make necessary wire and cable connections between signal heads and controllers
  • Repair, remove, and replace defective wiring and signal transmission lines
  • Install and maintain overhead and underground wiring used in traffic signal systems
  • Perform work involving splicing of cables
  • Respond to emergency trouble calls
  • Maintain records concerning work in progress and completed work
  • Assist Traffic Signal Technician with repair of traffic signal controllers, relays, flashers, push buttons, dials, monitors, circuit boards, etc. using voltmeters, transistor tester, oscilloscopes, and signal‑control test equipment
  • Construct solid‑state electronic traffic controllers from diagrams or rough drafts
Board of Education Responsibilities
  • Receive, review, assign, monitor, and process work orders
  • Verify and process employee daily records including time cards, travel logs, accident/compensation reports, personnel evaluation reports, and other reports as required
  • Consult with custodial engineers, administrators, or vendors on required maintenance or repair activities needed in buildings or on equipment
  • Consult with architects, inspectors, and engineering staff in the preparation of construction documents
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of an Apprenticeship Program classifying as Skilled Tradesman – Electrician sponsored by New York State in conjunction with a local union, private contractor, or employer, and ONE YEAR of full‑time experience as a skilled craft worker (journeyman) level electrician
  • OR four years of full‑time verifiable experience in all phases of installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical wiring, equipment, and devices, and one year of full‑time experience as a skilled craft worker electrician
  • Must present a certificate of completion or affidavit(s) verifying the required work experience at time of filing application
  • Special Requirement: possession of a current NYS Driver’s License
  • Thorough knowledge of the design, construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electric instruments, devices, and equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of common practices, tools, terminology, conduit and tin wall bending, fittings, and accident precautions of the trade
  • Thorough knowledge of maintenance of high‑voltage sub‑stations
  • Understanding of electrical plans, specifications, circuitry, schematics, wiring diagrams, rough sketches, and mechanical drawings
  • Good knowledge of the Electrical Ordinances of the City of Buffalo and the National Electrical Code
  • Good knowledge of safety practices and precautions
  • Knowledge of solid‑state equipment
  • Ability to work with low, high, and extra‑high voltage circuits
  • Ability to work and understand component parts of printed circuits and make minor adjustments
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain work records
