Position: Brick Mason for Restoration Work

I’m looking for one of the best restoration masons in Buffalo.

Maybe that sounds ambitious, but that’s genuinely what I want. Most of the work we do isn’t about laying as many brick as possible in a day. It’s about taking an old, tired building and making it look like the work was always meant to be there.

A lot of our projects are in and around Buffalo, where there’s no shortage of beautiful old masonry worth saving.

You’ll work on everything from chimney pointing, tuck pointing, and rebuilds to additions, retrofit openings, patios, and larger restoration projects. Recent jobs have included an addition on a public library, an American Legion building, a daycare, a flagstone patio at a high-end residence, and a variety of chimney repairs and rebuilds.

The day-to-day work includes setting scaffolding, grinding, cut-ins, flashings, jamb work around retrofit openings, brick, block, and adhered stone veneer.

But what really matters to me is craftsmanship. If you know how to lay brick with a level instead of relying entirely on a string, you probably understand the kind of mason I’m looking for. Restoration work is rarely perfectly straight or predictable, so you need to be able to work in three dimensions and make the finished product square, plumb, level, and true—even when the building itself isn’t.

And if you’ve been doing this long enough to have some wisdom to pass along to younger masons and apprentices, that’s extremely valuable here as well.

We’re a small, Buffalo-based masonry company. Most of our work is repair and restoration, but we also do block and adhered stone veneer. My employees are like family to me, our clients matter enormously, and I have a difficult time saying no to complicated work. I like solving problems, particularly the ones other people would rather walk away from.

What You’ll Do
  • Restore: Repair and rebuild masonry so the finished work blends naturally with the existing structure.
  • Build: Lay brick, block, and stone with the accuracy and finish expected on restoration and architectural work.
  • Solve: Figure out irregular conditions where simply following a string or repeating production work isn’t enough.
  • Retrofit: Perform grinding, cut-ins, flashings, and jamb work around new and modified openings.
  • Access: Set up scaffolding and handle the related site work needed to complete jobs safely and efficiently.
  • Contribute: Work across projects ranging from small chimney repairs to additions, restoration projects, and high-end residential masonry.
  • Lead: Help less-experienced masons improve their craft and, if you have the ability, take responsibility for running a crew.
What I’m Looking For
  • Excellent bricklaying ability, particularly on restoration work.
  • The ability to lay accurately with a level and produce work that is square, plumb, and true.
  • A broad masonry background rather than experience limited to high-production work.
  • An eye for finished work—masonry that doesn’t merely function, but actually looks right.
  • Enough experience to recognize problems and figure out how to solve them.
  • Crew leadership experience is valuable, but not required.
Compensation
  • $37 per hour
  • Production bonuses
  • Full-time work

We are hiring a brick and block mason who takes some pride in being able to stand back at the end of the job, look at the building, and know that the work belongs there. If that sounds like your kind of work, you may fit in very well here.
