Position: MOTOR EQUIPMENT MECHANIC (PROVISIONAL) DPW

Job Summary

The Head Motor Equipment Mechanic is considered a working supervisor who lays out and performs the work of a motor equipment mechanic at the skilled craft worker level (journeyman). Work is outlined by a superior, however, the incumbent performs the more difficult tasks of the trade. This position is distinguished from a Motor Equipment Mechanic by the difficulty of assignments performed and the supervision of employees.

Immediate supervision is exercised over Motor Equipment Mechanics, Auto Mechanic Helpers, Garage Attendants and other personnel assigned. Supervision is received from the department head or employees in positions so designated by the department head.

Supervises and participates in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, bulldozers, graders, snowplows and other automotive or motorized vehicles and equipment;
Leads in the repair of gasoline and diesel motor equipment, such as passenger automobiles, trucks and apparatus;
Troubleshoots vehicles and equipment and prescribes needed repairs;
Grinds valves and fits new bearings, pistons and rings;
Adjusts connecting rods and bearings;
Repairs/overhauls brake systems, differentials, transmissions and front or rear axles;
Carries out the preventive maintenance program in accordance with dealer specifications;
Performs yearly NYS Inspection on vehicles/equipment;
Maintains records and reports concerning vehicle maintenance and repair activities, i.e., worked performed on vehicles, cost of materials used, time required to perform the work;
Requisition s parts, materials and supplies needed in repairing of equipment and vehicles;
May road test equipment after completion of repair work;
May install, troubleshoot and repair vehicles radio equipment;
Performs related work in connection with the maintenance and repair activities of the repair shop.

Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Motor Equipment Mechanic or Engine Mechanic for one year.

Special Requirements

Possession of a current Class D NYS Drivers License or a current Class B NYS Commercial Drivers License which must be presented at time of appointment and must be maintained during employment.
Applicants who possess a Class D License will be eligible to be certified to the Departments of Administration and Finance, Police, Housing Authority and Board of Education ONLY
Applicants who possess a Class B Commercial Driver?s License will be eligible to be certified to ALL city departments or agencies where the position is located.

All applicants may be required to be licensed and certified by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles to provide State inspections on vehicles. This license and certification may be required in the various departments as needed and must be obtained during the probationary period and maintained during employment.
