General DescriptionThe Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Buffalo, Wyoming. Under direct supervision, this position is responsible for performing maintenance and repair on a variety of diesel and automotive equipment, including engine overhauls and tune‑ups, as well as work on brakes, steering systems, transmissions, and hydraulic components.
Essential Functions- Conduct wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on diesel, automotive, self‑propelled or towed equipment.
- Perform safety inspections on all types of diesel and automotive equipment.
- Read and interpret technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems on vehicles and equipment.
- Rigs and fabricates new equipment to district standards.
- Creates repair orders.
- Responsible for the inventory of the shop, equipment, and supplies.
- Designs and fabricates parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.
- Methods and techniques of diesel and automotive maintenance and repair.
- Electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
- Light and heavy‑duty automotive equipment and its parts (hydraulics, hydrostatics, drive trains, gas, and diesel engine overhauls).
- Grease and oil specifications.
- General servicing of equipment.
- Policies and safe work procedures.
- Education:
Associate’s Degree or 2–4 years of progressive work experience in heavy mechanics. - Experience:
0–2 years progressive work experience (if education is an Associate’s Degree), or 2–4 years (if no degree). - Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL.
- Must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays; required to report within 30 minutes of receiving the call.
- Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Constant use of manual and powered hand tools.
- Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
- Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently.
- Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods.
- Work in adverse environmental conditions.
- Working around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- FLSA:
Non‑exempt. - WYDOT will conduct motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver’s license.
- This position includes a $100 monthly tool allowance; candidates must provide their own tools.
- Occasional overnight travel is required.
