General Description

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Buffalo, Wyoming. Under direct supervision, this position is responsible for performing maintenance and repair on a variety of diesel and automotive equipment, including engine overhauls and tune‑ups, as well as work on brakes, steering systems, transmissions, and hydraulic components.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on diesel, automotive, self‑propelled or towed equipment.
  • Perform safety inspections on all types of diesel and automotive equipment.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Rigs and fabricates new equipment to district standards.
  • Creates repair orders.
  • Responsible for the inventory of the shop, equipment, and supplies.
  • Designs and fabricates parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.
Knowledge
  • Methods and techniques of diesel and automotive maintenance and repair.
  • Electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
  • Light and heavy‑duty automotive equipment and its parts (hydraulics, hydrostatics, drive trains, gas, and diesel engine overhauls).
  • Grease and oil specifications.
  • General servicing of equipment.
  • Policies and safe work procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Associate’s Degree or 2–4 years of progressive work experience in heavy mechanics.
  • Experience:

    0–2 years progressive work experience (if education is an Associate’s Degree), or 2–4 years (if no degree).
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
    Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL.
Physical Working Conditions
  • Must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays; required to report within 30 minutes of receiving the call.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Constant use of manual and powered hand tools.
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently.
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods.
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions.
  • Working around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
Notes
  • FLSA:
    Non‑exempt.
  • WYDOT will conduct motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver’s license.
  • This position includes a $100 monthly tool allowance; candidates must provide their own tools.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.
  • The Wyoming Department of Transportation is a Drug‑Free Workplace.
