Heavy Equipment Mechanic
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Buffalo, Wyoming. Under direct supervision, this position is responsible for performing maintenance and repair on a variety of diesel and automotive equipment, including engine overhauls and tune-ups (diesel and gasoline), as well as work on brakes, steering systems, transmissions, and hydraulic components.

Essential functions include:
- Conducts a wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on various diesel and automotive equipment, along with other self-propelled or towed equipment.
- Performs safety inspections on all types of diesel and automotive equipment.
- Reads and interprets technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems on vehicles and equipment.
- Rigs and fabricates new equipment to district standards.
- Creates repair orders.
- Responsible for the inventory of the shop, equipment, and supplies.
- Designs and fabricates parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.
Knowledge of methods and techniques of diesel and automotive maintenance and repair, electronic principles and diagnostic tools, light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and its parts, grease and oil specifications, general servicing of equipment, and policies and safe work procedures are required.
Minimum qualifications include 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) or an Associate's Degree with 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics). Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL is required.
Physical working conditions include availability for emergency work calls at any time, random drug and alcohol testing, constant use of manual and powered hand tools, daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment, occasional exposure to hazardous materials, ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently, ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods, work in adverse environmental conditions, and working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
