Engineering Design & Technologists, Mechanical Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Aerospace / Aviation / Avionics
Summary: An established global leader in high-pressure bleed air ducting systems is searching for a Design Engineer II to join their team in Burbank, CA. They provide "total resource" system solutions for complex ducting requirements, with their components found on most aircraft operating worldwide. This role is part of the Design Engineering Team and shall serve as a stress analysis and mechanical design subject matter expert supporting a variety of projects.
The employee will work unsupervised approximately 50% of the time.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
There are two primary job functions:
Detailed component design and FEA based stress analysis.
- Component design consists of conceptual sketches (physical or CAD) which are fed to the drafting team. Significant application of concepts such as design to specification, design for manufacturing, design for inspection, and design for cost.
- Stress analysis has a heavy emphasis on structural dynamics, fatigue, and nonlinear solutions. FEA tasks range from simple geometry creation and meshing all the way to final analysis report.
- Works with a diverse cross-functional team of engineers designing and analyzing metallic parts that are produced using a variety of manufacturing methods. Common methods: forming and welding of sheet metal, machining, additive manufacturing, and casting.
- Regular interaction with internal teams of:
Project Engineers, Drafters, Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers, Test Lab Personnel, Contracts, and Sales. - Tasks involve a full range of product life cycle including new product development, legacy product support, research and development, and failure analysis.
- Often necessary to create (i.e. programming) custom design and task automation tools in Excel (VBA), MATLAB, Python, and the API of applicable calculation software.
- Internal flow calculations and external insulation calculations are common using in-house tools.
- Travel required is 5% nationwide (AZ, TX, IN, OH); includes software training, travel to support project engineers for customer design reviews, and potential onsite customer support during initial quotation or design phases with higher level engineers.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
There are no direct supervisory responsibilities associated with this position. The employee is expected to help train and mentor junior employees as applicable.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:
- BS Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Astronautical or similar Engineering field. (MS Degree preferred).
- 3-5 years of experience in an engineering design environment.
- 2-3 years of experience with finite element analysis stress software (Hyper Works, Femap/NASTRAN, or ANSYS Mechanical).
- Can be trained in Hyperworks, but having Hyperworks experience is PLUS
- Ducting or aerospace experience (especially specialized aerospace) is a PLUS
- Demonstrated expertise in data analysis and reduction.
- Structural experience REQUIRED; not just CAD modeling
- Experience Types:
- Experience with linear and nonlinear static FEA solutions is required
. - Experience with modal, harmonic response, and random response is required
. - Experience with contact analysis is preferred.
- Experience with topology optimization is required
. - Experience with simulation of metal forming methods is preferred.
- Experience with Solid Works, CATIA, or similar drafting software is preferred but not required in anyway.
- Experience with Stainless Steel, Titanium, Inconel, and other superalloys is preferred. Composite or additive also allowed
- Experience applying GD&T per ASME Y14.5:2018 (and/or 2009) to complex components and assemblies is required
.
Compensation:
$100,000 to $110,000
Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education.
Benefit packages for this role will include medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as HSA, FSA, and DCFSA account options, and 401k retirement account access with employer matching. Employees in this role are also entitled to paid sick leave and/or other paid time off as provided by applicable law.
