Job Summary

Set up and operate hydraulic power press brake machines to bend, form, notch, punch or straighten sheet metal or steel plate products as specified by shop work orders, blueprints, drawings, templates, or layouts to customer specifications.

Essential Functions
  • Read blueprints or job orders to determine product specifications and tooling instructions and to plan operational sequences.
  • Set up, operate, or tend machines to bend, form, notch, punch, or straighten sheet metal or steel plate products.
  • Remove completed materials or products from machine.
  • Problem Sensitivity – The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Measure dimensions of finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments, templates, and fixtures.
  • Examine completed work pieces for defects such as chipped edges and marred surfaces, and sort defective pieces according to types of flaws.
  • Adjust machine components to regulate speeds, pressures, and other actions, according to product specifications, and using gauges and hand tools.
  • Perform minor machine maintenance, such as oiling or cleaning machines, dies, or work pieces, or adding coolant to machine reservoirs.
  • Operate material handling equipment including but not limited to overhead cranes, hoists, forklifts, and other appropriate equipment and devices to place work pieces on or off the machine.
  • Must be able to stand for an 8–10 hour shift.

Skills
  • Understanding the use of a tape measure.
  • Quality Control Analysis – Conducting tests and inspections of products and processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Troubleshooting – Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Operation and Control – Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Mathematics – Using mathematics to solve problems.
  • Reading Comprehension – Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Understanding the use of a vernier caliper is a plus.
Attributes
  • Arm-Hand Steadiness – The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
  • Control Precision – The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine.
  • Near Vision – The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Multi limb Coordination – The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down. It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.
  • Strength Factor – The ability to occasionally stoop and bend to inspect work pieces. The ability to exert 21–35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 13–21 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 7–10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
