Join Fairfax County's award-winning Wastewater Management Team as an Engineer V in the Wastewater Collection Division. You will lead a diverse team to define, plan and deliver capital improvement projects including design and construction of pump stations, force mains, and gravity sewers and associated facilities. The Wastewater Collection Division (WCD) manages nearly 3,300 miles of pipe, over 100,000 associated structures, 60 metering sites, and 70 pumping stations.

Under the general supervision of the ESB Branch Chief you will supervise project engineers, review and approve their work for planning, analysis, design or construction of Capital Projects, and provide engineering technical direction, guidance on standards and regulations, and mentorship. You will also coordinate planning and capital projects with the Asset Management Team, operations and maintenance staff, manage collection system studies, and may lead emergency failure response efforts.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise a team of project engineers and review/approve work performed by CIP engineers for planning, analysis, design, or construction of Capital Projects.
  • Provide engineering technical direction and guidance to WCD engineers and project managers on engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Offer leadership, mentorship, and identify training and process improvements.
  • Plan, develop, and implement wastewater collection system capital projects and provide technical guidance and review of work performed by the team.
  • Provide technical guidance and project management for wastewater capital projects.
  • Coordinate with the Asset Management Team, operations, and maintenance staff to perform engineering analysis and capital planning.
  • Directly manage collection system studies, evaluations, assessments, and design projects.
  • In the event of emergency failures, participate and/or lead efforts to identify a solution.
Emergency Service Responsibilities

Positions are designated as emergency service and may require 24‑hour on‑call duties, after‑hours and weekend work during emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a four‑year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor’s degree in the appropriate engineering or architecture field, plus five years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering or architectural field, including one year of supervisory experience.

Certificates & Licenses Required
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia Professional Engineer or Architect license.

An individual with a valid Professional Engineer or Architect license in another state will be granted a temporary exemption pending reciprocity decisions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five (5) years working on Wastewater Collection System projects.
  • One (1) year of experience using GIS Systems (Geographic Information Systems).
  • Five (5) years of experience in Engineering Planning & Design.
  • Five (5) years of Project Management experience.
  • One (1) year of experience in Construction Management.
  • Two (2) years of experience supervising staff.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing, lift up to 15 lbs, operate county vehicles, use personal protective equipment, have generally sedentary work but must stoop, bend, and reach, have visual acuity for computer work, and possess the ability to operate keyboard‑driven devices. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
