Residency Program Overview

Blackbird’s Residency Program prepares Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners to practice confidently as specialists in child and adolescent mental health care.

  • 9‑12 month program for recent graduates or those without prior licensure.
  • Supports transition from graduate school to professional practice with clinical experience and didactic learning.
  • Provides tools and support to deliver cutting‑edge diagnoses and personalized treatment.
  • Promotes growth through relationships with colleagues and collaboration.
  • Upon completion, graduates may advance as senior members of the Blackbird medical team for at least 2 years.

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Director of the Residency Program, you will deliver comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, treatment planning, and medication management for children, adolescents, and young adults. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to ensure high‑quality care and make a tangible difference in patients and families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations, assessments, and diagnoses, creating personalized treatment plans, including prescribing medication.
  • Collaborate with psychotherapists and other professionals on integrated treatment and medication management.
  • Work from our Burke, VA clinic up to 2 days per week.
  • Meet with the residency cohort and supervisor to discuss progress and challenges routinely.
  • Provide education and consultation for patients and families.
  • Manage diagnostic testing, digital and lab results.
  • Participate in weekly team and supervisory clinical meetings.
  • Maintain thorough records and uphold HIPAA confidentiality.
  • Perform other clinical‑related activities as assigned.
Qualifications

Requirements
  • National certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
  • Available to work 10 a.m.–6:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited nursing program (PMHNP, Master’s in NP) completed within the last ~12 months or less than 1 year of work experience as a PMHNP.
  • Active PMHNP license and DEA in Virginia (or on track to receive it by residency start).
  • Upon successful completion of the 12‑month residency, participants will join the Blackbird Clinical Services team for an additional two‑year period, totaling a three‑year commitment.

Salary Range

$100,000 – $112,000 USD
