Job Description

Perform a combination of equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks related to roadway maintenance. Operate light, medium, and heavy‑duty highway equipment and vehicles to perform maintenance, construction, and emergency roadway operations such as snow and ice removal. Provide traffic control, maintain safety, and assist the crew in project completion.

How you will contribute
  • Operate and maintain light and medium‑duty equipment for maintenance and construction work.
  • Prepare and operate equipment for snow, ice removal, and other emergency operations; clear roadways of snow, ice, and debris; and provide traffic control.
  • Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy‑duty highway equipment and vehicles for maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Apply site‑level safety protocols, identify hazards, wear personal protective equipment, and maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment.
  • Participate as a working member of the crew to perform manual labor, hand‑ and power‑tool tasks, and project‑related work.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and replacement of equipment and vehicles; complete pre‑trip inspections.
  • Install, maintain, and remove traffic‑control devices in work zones, detours, and lane closures, following MUTCD guidelines.

  • Capability to maintain inventory records and complete simple paperwork.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment, complying with DOT and VDOT policies.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining hand and power tools.
  • Proficiency in operating light and medium‑duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Read and interpret plans and sketches.
  • Team‑work orientation to complete assignments.
  • Knowledge of work‑zone safety, traffic‑control devices, and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding traffic‑control devices.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy‑duty equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and procedures for performing highway maintenance and operating equipment.
  • Working knowledge of work‑zone traffic‑control standards and techniques.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment, complying with DOT and VDOT policies.
  • Capability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Read and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
  • Safety shoes required.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining hand and power tools.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining light, medium, and heavy‑duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
Additional Considerations
  • Desired combination of training, experience, or education in maintenance, vehicle operations, or related field.
  • Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident clean‑up.
  • Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements.
