About the RTS Volunteer Program

The goal of the Volunteer Program is to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities specifically aimed at addressing the trauma from sexual violence. As a volunteer‑based agency, our volunteers play a significant role in achieving our mission. Volunteers participate in many facets of our agency.

Primary Responsibilities of RTS Volunteers
  • Staffing the 24-hour crisis line as Sexual Assault Counselors (as defined in Section 1035.2 of the California Evidence Code).
  • Accompanying victims of sexual assault and abuse in a variety of settings, including forensic interviews, medical exams, and legal proceedings.
  • Providing advocacy for victims and families.
  • Supporting victims over the phone and in person.
  • Providing outreach to various communities, particularly those that are underserved.
  • Representing RTS at community events.
Volunteer Coordinator Position

Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, the Volunteer Coordinator will:

  • Create and maintain monthly crisis line schedule; ensure accurate updates of schedule at all times.
  • Provide direct ongoing support, supervision, and evaluation to all volunteers.
    • Ensure Sexual Assault Counselors (SACs) are providing services in accordance with RTS’ mission, service standards, and grant objectives.
    • Provide follow‑up telephone calls and advocacy support to SACs, as needed.
    • Coordinate and facilitate monthly continuing education training sessions.
    • Provide written material and other content for the monthly SAC newsletter.
  • Coordinate volunteer recruitment efforts; screen and interview applicants for volunteer program participation.
  • Support implementation of 80‑hour volunteer sexual assault trainings, three times per year.
    • Co‑facilitate and coordinate the 80‑hour volunteer sexual assault training.
    • Conduct mid‑training evaluations and exit interviews.
  • Provide direct support to survivors of sexual assault and their support system, as needed.
    • Act as a backup support to SACs.
    • Answer crisis line calls and meet with walk‑in clients during business hours, as needed.
    • Provide medical/legal accompaniment services to survivors of sexual assault, as needed.
    • Collect, maintain, and input accurate confidential client information into agency’s database.
  • Provide prevention and educational presentations to San Mateo County schools, community organizations, and individuals affected by sexual abuse/assault.
  • Maintain a positive, professional working relationship with volunteers, clients, the general public, agency staff and community partners at all times.
  • Complete monthly reports.
  • Perform administrative and operational tasks such as copying, stocking informational packets, and sharing office coverage (e.g. answering phones).
  • Adhere to all RTS personnel policies and protocols.
  • Perform other agency responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent career experience required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in volunteer program or comparable program coordination.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Must have the ability to establish rapport with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Familiarity with San Mateo County and community resources.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to listen, clarify, validate, and respectfully challenge.
  • Must be a creative thinker who is able to translate RTS’ mission, vision, and values to a wide array of audiences.
  • Self‑motivated and a team player; ability to work in a fast‑paced and evolving environment.
  • Must bring an eager and open‑minded attitude, including the ability to problem solve as needed.
  • Must be comfortable working in a small team environment.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Interest in and commitment to developing or expanding trauma‑focused counseling and advocacy skills.
