Summary
Join the Iowa City VA Health Care System at the Burlington Clinic as a Float Pool Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). In this primary care role you will provide hands-on nursing support through vital signs, medication administration, patient education, minor procedure assistance, and proactive care coordination to ensure high-quality veteran-centered outpatient care.
QualificationsApplicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- United States citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- English language proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Education and licensure. Active, full, current and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a state, territory, or Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia.
- Grade Determinations.
- GS-03 – None beyond the basic requirements. LPNs at this grade level are expected to perform all duties within the scope of their license (e.g., medication administration). Completed work may require routine or detailed higher-level review depending on complexity.
- GS-04 – Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN; or graduation from an approved school and one year of nursing-care experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical facility; or graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.
- GS-05 – Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems; works with the RN or MD/DO to train less experienced LPNs/LVNs and NAs/HTs; provides effective education to patients and families; serves as a responsible member of the nursing team;
prepares and administers medications; observes and documents medication response; recognizes emergency situations; responds to equipment issues; and receives general supervision from an RN or MD/DO. Expected to have a broad working knowledge of practical nursing procedures. - GS-06 – Completion of at least one year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent; fully meets all performance requirements for the GS-5 LPN/LVN; technically proficient in initiating, performing and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations; applies judgment to select appropriate order and sequence of procedures; accurately records patient information; requires only a general review by an RN or physician;
observes and responds to patient needs; considers emotional, socio-economic, and age-related factors; administers medications; promptly documents and reports deviations; recognizes urgent or emergent situations; understands human behavior; establishes constructive relationships with patients and families; fosters an environment of respect for privacy and dignity; incorporates customer service standards; performs support duties for complex diagnostic tests; serves as a preceptor; seeks educational opportunities to enhance knowledge;
