POSITION DESCRIPTION AND SPECIFICATIONS

This is a generalized position description. Specific duties and responsibilities vary, depending upon the assigned duty.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requires the following (or equivalent qualifications):

* High school diploma

* Possession of a valid State of Iowa Athletic Coach Endorsement or Authorization

* Demonstrated knowledge of, interest in, and aptitude for coaching the specific athletic area

* Head coaching experience in the specific athletic area

* Excellent communication, public relations, and organizational skills

* Must have or be willing to obtain Category I - Bloodborne Pathogen Training and CPR Training

POSITION PURPOSE

To help each participating student achieve a higher level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem. Provide leadership and direction for the specific athletic program from the seventh through the twelfth grade.

SUPERVISION

Supervises assistant coaches, students and provides leadership and direction to underclass and middle school coaches in the program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Maintain strict confidentiality.

* Plan, organize, and oversee a specific athletic program, contributing to the overall success of the activities program.

* Develop, motivate, and provide appropriate supervision to assistant coaches, underclass coaches, and middle school coaches.

* Coach and teach individual participants in the skills, discipline, and sportsmanlike behavior necessary for participation and achievement in the specific athletic activity.

* Accompany participants to all contests ensuring proper conduct and grooming.

* Make a commitment to be a part of the strength and conditioning program throughout the year for the benefit of the athletes.

* Maintain an awareness of and ensure compliance with state rules and regulations and district policies relating to the specific activity.

* Plan and schedule a regular program of practice and submit schedule to the Activities Director

* Work with the Activities Director in scheduling interscholastic contests, transportation requests, and participant dismissal times.

* Maintain an updated eligibility list of participants.

* Ensure participants have physical examinations and proof of insurance. Submit information to the Activities Director.

* Maintain an inventory of equipment, supplies, and uniforms, issues and checks in equipment, and makes recommendations for the purchase of new equipment, supplies, and uniforms.

* Ensure participants receive a copy of the Athletic Handbook, check for their understanding of the rules, complete and return necessary forms.

* Ensure facilities and equipment are prepared for practices and events and properly secure at conclusion of the event.

* Attend coaches meetings, annual rule meetings, awards and honorary banquets, parties, and athletic contests at other levels of competition.

* Scout upcoming opponents and submit a schedule of planned scouting trips.

* Select managers and organize duties and responsibilities of managers.

* Prepare and submit reports and records as requested.

* Perform public relations functions such as developing student interest in the athletic program, cooperating with media, reporting scores to the media, maintaining display area for awards, communicating with parents, and cooperating with other coaches.

* Establish requirements for awarding letters and submit to Activities Director prior to start of the season.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Excellent human relations, verbal communication, and organizational skills. Ability to relate positively with staff, parents, students, and community. Demonstrated ability to produce results through previous assignments. Demonstrated leadership ability and a desire to lead. Knowledge of and aptitude for coaching the specific athletic activity.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL EFFORT

Continuous speaking, hearing, and visual effort. Frequent standing, walking, and sitting. Occasional climbing, lifting, and carrying up to 75 lbs. Close mental and visual attention. Work involves some irregularities and difficulties, repetitive and varied tasks. Continuous general concentration.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions vary with the specific assignment and may include working in both indoor and outdoor arenas or fields in various types of weather conditions. Occasionally exposed to dust, noise, odors, and other irritants. Stress associated with the pressure of coaching. Work may involve irregular hours and days. Some travel required. Exposed to the hazards of the road when traveling.
