CONSTRUCTION ESTIMATOR Position Summary
NELCO Worldwide is seeking a detail-oriented and highly motivated Construction Estimator to join our growing team. This position plays a critical role in securing new business by developing accurate, competitive, and comprehensive cost estimates for commercial, industrial, healthcare, and specialty radiation shielding construction projects throughout North America.
NELCO specializes in the design, manufacture, and installation of radiation shielding systems and related construction solutions for healthcare, industrial, research, and scientific facilities throughout North America and internationally. The Construction Estimator works closely with project managers, operations leadership, engineering, manufacturing, subcontractors, vendors, and customers to analyze project requirements, assess project risks, and develop winning proposals.
The ideal candidate possesses strong analytical and mathematical abilities, exceptional attention to detail, construction knowledge, and the ability to manage multiple opportunities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Estimating & Bid Preparation- Review project drawings, specifications, bid documents, contracts, and scope requirements to determine project costs and constructability.
- Prepare detailed take-offs for labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and specialty products.
- Develop accurate and competitive project cost estimates, budgets, and bid proposals.
- Evaluate project requirements and identify potential risks, opportunities, and cost-saving measures.
- Analyze labor productivity, material pricing, equipment utilization, logistics, and project schedules.
- Prepare Requests for Information (RFIs), scope clarifications, and bid qualifications, as necessary.
- Participate in bid review meetings and estimating strategy discussions with company leadership.
- Assemble and submit complete bid packages in accordance with client requirements and deadlines.
- Support pricing strategy discussions and proposal development efforts.
- Solicit and evaluate pricing from subcontractors, suppliers, manufacturers, and vendors.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with key industry partners.
- Review quotations to ensure scope completeness, pricing accuracy, and competitive positioning.
- Assist in the evaluation of subcontractor qualifications and capabilities.
- Coordinate project turnover meetings with operations and project management teams following project award.
- Assist with budget development and project handoff documentation.
- Support project teams with estimating-related questions during project execution.
- Participate in post-project reviews to identify estimating lessons learned and continuous improvement opportunities.
- Maintain estimating databases, historical cost information, bid files, and pricing records.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within the estimating department.
- Ensure compliance with company quality standards, estimating procedures, and ISO requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality of bid information, pricing strategies, and customer data.
- Occasionally, visit project sites to evaluate existing conditions, verify project scope, and gather information necessary for accurate pricing.
- Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Business, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of construction estimating experience preferred.
- Experience estimating commercial, industrial, healthcare, manufacturing, or specialty construction projects strongly preferred.
- Experience estimating engineered systems, specialty construction products, healthcare facilities, radiation shielding systems, industrial process environments, or other technically complex projects is highly desirable.
- Experience collaborating with subcontractors, vendors, fabrication shops, or specialty trade contractors preferred.
- Familiarity with project delivery methods including Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, and negotiated contracts is a plus.
- Ability to read, interpret, and analyze architectural, structural, mechanical, and construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent organizational, planning, and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, project teams, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Experience with Plan Swift or similar digital take-off software preferred.
- Ability to review, manipulate, annotate, and print digital plans and construction documents.
