Interim Elementary Special Education Teacher/Liaison - 2026/2027

Job Goal

The special education teacher coordinates and provides programming for children with disabilities, including instruction in academic, social language, motor skill development, and self-regulation.

Responsibilities
  • Assess the capabilities and skills of each assigned student for instruction and seek means to assist each student to learn effectively in the area assigned.
  • Design and implement programs for students eligible to receive Special Education services.
    • Include academic, social/emotional, and behavioral components.
    • Collect data and use data to create specially designed plans and guide instruction.
  • Conduct evaluations under the Special Education Laws.
    • Review the educationally relevant information on students.
    • Design and administer a relevant learning style and achievement assessment battery.
    • Prepare a written report of findings.
    • Summarize assessment findings and recommend pertinent educational strategies/programming at the TEAM meeting, contributing to the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
    • Attend TEAM meetings of students evaluated.
  • Complete paperwork associated with special education, including the development of IEPs, timelines, and progress reports.
  • Advise and assist teachers in diagnostic and remedial measures, and provide/implement modifications of curriculum materials to address learning difficulties.
    • Collaborate with general education teachers, social workers, Team Chairperson, School Psychologist, specialists, other related service providers, and outside agencies to support students across all developmental areas.
  • Prepare and maintain records to facilitate a flow of information among staff and others.
  • Communicate/consult with parents so as to:
    • Keep parents informed of student progress.
    • Involve parents, to the maximum extent possible, in efforts directed at IEP goal attainment and student success.
  • Develop a personal plan for professional development in collaboration with the Building Principal and Director of Special Education.
  • Attend all professional meetings scheduled by the Superintendent of Schools, Director of Special Education, or building Principal.
  • Ensure that all Massachusetts Special Education Regulations are followed and implemented.
  • Perform any other duties as requested by the Director of Special Education and/or building team chair.
  • Requirements
    • Master’s degree in special education preferred.
    • DESE certification in moderate special needs is required.
    • OG certification preferred.
    • Good organizational and communication skills, experience in delivering co‑teaching, 1:1, and small group instruction.
    • A minimum of three (3) years of experience working with children diagnosed with disabilities as well as leadership experience/skills preferred.
    Terms of Employment

    $125 per day including benefits. When the teacher comes off the salary schedule the compensation will be in accordance with the Burlington Educators' Association Unit A collective bargaining agreement.
