Position Summary

Monitor and evaluate the quality of clinical care for injured patients through issue identification, primary, secondary, tertiary, and multidisciplinary reviews, and performance improvement.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop the quality improvement program of the Trauma Division in accordance with American College of Surgeon's Committee on Trauma Guidelines.
  • Collaborate with Trauma Program Nurse Director and Trauma Medical Director to review performance and safety of the Trauma Center, promote loop closure, and optimize clinical outcomes.
  • Monitor quality of care provided to trauma patients (adherence to protocols, conduct of resuscitation, audit filters).
  • Provide primary review of morbidity/mortality and identify process/system measures for all trauma patients.
  • Assist with tertiary review of morbidity/mortality of all trauma patients.
  • Identify performance improvement issues through chart review and attendance at morning report.
  • Identify quality improvement projects for interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Identify problems with trauma care and intervene when appropriate or refer problems to appropriate individual.
  • Coordinate interdisciplinary trauma quality improvement conferences for the adult trauma service.
  • Input PI outcome data into the trauma registry.
  • Record minutes of the Adult Trauma TPOPPC and Trauma M&M Conferences.
  • Identify deficiencies impeding the maintenance of Level I trauma center standards and suggest methods for addressing these deficiencies.
  • Attend resuscitations of patients triaged as Full Trauma Response, when available.
  • Review trauma cases and provide feedback on QI issues to healthcare providers within and outside Lahey Hospital Medical Center.
  • Assist in reviewing Trauma Resuscitation Audio Visual recording QI process.
  • Participate in preparation of re-verification application for American College of Surgeons trauma center verification when required.
  • Coordinate communication with the state ME Office to receive autopsy reports in a timely fashion.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare providers involved in the care of trauma patients to develop protocols for the care of injured patients.
  • Maintain all current trauma protocols and update per organizational guidelines.
  • Monitor and assist with trauma patient transfers, ensuring adherence to transfer protocol process and provide feedback to transferring hospital staff and physicians as well as EMS.
  • Serve as a resource person to staff caring for the injured trauma patient and collaborate with surgical teams, social work, rehabilitation and medical staff on issues related to trauma patient care.
  • Assist with Trauma Service Nurse Director in coordinating and executing interdisciplinary educational programs regarding care of the injured patient, including Advanced Trauma Life Support and Trauma Nursing Core Course.
  • Maintain current knowledge of “Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient 2014.”
  • Perform other similar job functions as required or directed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current Commonwealth of Massachusetts Registered Nurse License.
  • Trauma Certified Registered Nurse Certification within one year of hire.
  • Skills:

    identify and implement opportunities for process improvement within the trauma patient population; strong data analytic skills; accuracy and thoroughness; demonstrate clinical competence; demonstrate leadership qualities; work collaboratively with nurses, physicians, EMS and administrative colleagues; excellent written and verbal communication; proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Attendance within six months of hire at Society of Trauma Nurses: TOPIC course.
  • Successful completion of Trauma Nursing Core Course; instructor status preferred.
Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required;
    Master’s degree preferred.
  • Registered Nurse license required.
  • 3–5 years related work experience required.
  • Trauma experience and/or emergency experience.
Compensation

Hourly wage range $38.11 – $98.23. Actual compensation may vary based on seniority, education, training, relevant experience, certifications, location, and applicable shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime, and other additional pay practices.
