Your Opportunity
Stantec’s Cultural Resources team invites on‑call Archaeological Field Technicians to support field projects primarily in Maine and New York, across the Northeast and Mid‑Atlantic regions.
The successful applicant will execute field‑related tasks under the supervision of an archaeological field supervisor and will travel extensively, including frequent overnight stays.
YourKey Responsibilities
The primary focus of the role is fieldwork, but the position may also include exposure to laboratory research and analysis.
- Perform archaeological fieldwork tasks such as controlled surface survey, shovel test survey, and excavation.
- Clean, catalog, photograph, and label artifacts recovered from surface collection and excavation.
- Experience conducting Phase I, II, and III archaeological surveys, including inventory, testing, and/or data recovery.
- Previous experience with digital field recording (e.g., ESRI Field Maps app for ArcGIS).
- Assist with setting up a site grid, datum, and excavation units; map site plans, individual shovel tests, units, and features in plan and profile.
- Identify historic and precontact artifacts following standard collection procedures.
- Identify cultural features.
- Adaptability and willingness to work both as part of a team and independently.
- Ability and willingness to work under varied weather conditions.
- Walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours over rugged terrain; carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Commitment to a strong safety culture; industry‑specific safety training certificates are an asset.
- Detail oriented, resourceful, self‑motivated, with strong initiative.
- Positive and energetic attitude.
- Frequent out‑of‑town travel, potentially for extended periods.
- B.A./B.S. in anthropology, archaeology or a related field (sufficient experience).
- Successful completion of an archaeology field school (preferred).
- At least six months of experience conducting archaeological survey and excavation (preferred).
- Knowledge of prehistoric and historic material culture.
- Ability to complete physically demanding tasks in remote areas and/or humid continental climates, including walking, hiking, carrying loads up to 50 pounds, and digging.
- Qualified applicants should exhibit strong technical skills, good communication skills, and comfort making decisions in the field.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and personal transportation.

Pay Range- Location in MN, OH, VT, CA, NY: $45,500.00 – $63,700.00 annually
- Location in WA, DC, CA, MA: $53,700.00 – $75,200.00 annually
