Job Description
Science Lab Technician

5.5 hours per day, academic year (180 days)

Reporting to the Chair of Science Department,primary role of this position is to support the science department in a variety of ways.

The Science Lab Technician is responsible for preparing materials and maintaining a safe, functional, and efficient laboratory environment for students and faculty.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lab Preparation: Accurately prepare, set up, and/or test materials, chemical solutions, equipment, and specimens for student labs and teacher demonstrations.
  • Inventory Management: Manage the science department's inventory by ordering, receiving, and stocking chemicals, equipment, and supplies. Maintain an organized and up-to-date catalog of all materials, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Safety: Follow all safety protocols, ensure the proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and biological waste in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Clean returned equipment and glassware. Inspect returned and stored equipment, such as glassware, balances, hot plates, burner tubing, and microscopes and coordinate or complete repair work, routine maintenance, cleaning, and calibration of laboratory equipment as needed. Replace copier or printer cartridges.
  • Clerical Tasks : copy, sort, file, or laminate documents and manipulatives for student use for science classes. Edit documents and spreadsheets using Google apps for education.
Qualifications & Skills:

Required:

  • Exceptional organizational skills and a meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and solve problems effectively.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty.
  • Highly organized and safety-conscious

Preferred:

  • Experience or education in a science or pharmaceutical field.
  • Previous experience working in a laboratory, especially in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures
    , equipment, and safety protocols.

Working Conditions:

  • This position requires standing and moving throughout the laboratory spaces.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects up to 20 lbs
    , such as supply boxes and equipment.
  • The role involves potential exposure to chemicals, biological specimens, and fumes. All necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided and must be worn.
