Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
The DPW’s Fleet Maintenance Division maintains all municipal vehicles for the Town of Burlington. The division performs repairs including welding, metal fabrication, brazing, making hydraulic lines, fixing snow plows and sanders, preventative maintenance, diagnostic services, and other repairs. We are seeking an individual to perform highly skilled maintenance and repair work on heavy and light Town vehicles and equipment, working under the direction of the Superintendent of the Fleet Maintenance Division.
EssentialFunctions
- Perform mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance work; troubleshoot gasoline and diesel internal combustion engine‑powered electrical systems and remove and replace clutches and transmissions
- Perform preventative maintenance work such as lubrication and replacement of oil filters, wheel alignments, and adjustment of brakes and clutches
- Perform emergency repairs in the field and respond to other related emergencies
- Remove and disassemble diesel and gasoline engines, replace faulty parts, grind valves, and conduct engine overhauls
- Perform auto body work and related welding and fabrication duties
- Utilize work order system and other electronic devices to complete daily assignments
- Inspect trucks and issue inspection stickers
- Assist in snow removal operations; subject to emergency recall
- Must possess a CDL Class B License
- Must possess a Hoisting License 2A, 4E & 4G (applicants without the necessary CDL and hoisting licenses may be considered under certain conditions)
- Experience with and knowledge of principles, procedures, methods and techniques involved in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered motor vehicles, generators, and other equipment
- Mechanical abilities to diagnose, repair, and maintain a variety of motorized equipment
- Proficiency in using a computer and required software
- Availability for emergency snow removal operations

Full time union position, 40 hours per week, within the Department of Public Works bargaining unit.
Pay range within Group 86 of the DPW contract starts at $29.78/hr, providing annual salary increases to a maximum rate of $42.35/hr, along with comprehensive and generous benefits.
Selected candidate shall be required to submit to a full background check as required by MA General Law and DOT regulations. Any conditional offer of employment is contingent upon satisfactory background check results.
