Junior Applied Research Engineer

The hourly rate for this position is expected to be between $40.00 – $50.00 per hour, depending on geographic location, experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate. This is a temporary position, approximately 4 months, with possible extension to 6 months.

Job Summary:

• Support Applied Research activities for corneal health device programs through hands-on data collection, ground-truth generation, image processing, and algorithm evaluation
• Use imaging hardware to collect data per established procedures and study plans
• Generate and maintain high-quality ground-truth datasets for computer vision algorithm development and validation
• Process ophthalmic image data using existing Python/C++ scripts, including batch processing and result review
• Perform first-line troubleshooting of data collection, script, and image quality issues
• Analyze data to identify failure modes and improve collection/annotation workflows
• Document experiments and prepare concise progress summaries
• Support unit testing and performance evaluation of image processing and algorithmic pipelines
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Applied Research, software, hardware, and clinical teams

Requirements:

• 0–3 years of relevant experience in imaging, computer vision, robotics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or related field
• Hands-on experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing experimental or imaging datasets
• Proficiency in Python; experience with OpenCV, Num Py, Pandas, or Sci Py strongly preferred
• Ability to run, debug, and make limited modifications to existing Python and/or C++ scripts
• Familiarity with image processing/computer vision concepts (segmentation, feature extraction, registration, detection/tracking, calibration, or quality assessment)
• Comfortable working with hardware, lab setups, and imperfect real-world data
• Strong organization, documentation, and communication skills
• Experience with Git, Linux/command-line tools, MATLAB, C++, or medical/ophthalmic imaging is a plus
• BSc or MSc in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
