You Will Do

An employee in this position will serve in a dual role capacity as an Administrative Assistant and Life Safety Educator for the Burlington Fire Department. As an Educator, this person will develop and facilitate programming for the community, including scheduling public events for shift personnel. As an administrative assistant, work will include supporting the Community Risk Reduction Division with administrative needs as well as understanding essential functions of the Senior Administrative Assistant to serve in case of absence.

Customer assistance is a key component as the departmental purpose is to serve the public. Work is evaluated through contact tracking data, compliance with deadlines, effectiveness in dealing with customers, review of work, and feedback from employees and coworkers. This position reports to the Assistant Chief of Community Risk Reduction.

  • Assisting customers and staff
  • Providing excellent customer service to call in or walk in customers
  • Management of alarm system documentation within the city Alarm Registration Program
  • Updating computerized records
  • Front desk/Receptionist coverage
  • Coordinating and presenting departmental events, school programs, and other educational events
  • Scheduling and coordination of special events for shift personnel
  • Online/social media public outreach
  • Website update/page development
  • Support of internal and external committees
  • Child Passenger Safety program support and administration
  • Coordination of smoke alarm installations with staff
  • Supporting senior staff members with administrative/clerical needs
  • Accepting and processing payments

Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of standard office equipment and office practices and procedures
  • Ability to meet and communicate with the public effectively
  • Ability to maintain filing systems, maintaining records per the applicable retention schedules
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently
  • Proficiency with computer use, word processing, and the ability to learn new computer programs
  • Possess strong communication skills
  • Ability to operate in a team concept
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city employees and the public
  • Ability to develop and present fire safety education to the public
  • Ability to obtain Child Passenger Safety Certification within 18 months
  • Ability to obtain NC Fire and Life Safety Educator, Level 1 Certification
Minimum Qualifications

High School degree or GED is required. Specialists in this class should be proficient with routine office work such as email, word documents, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. It is desirable for staff to have experience with education and program development.

Work Schedule

Hours for this position are 40 hours per week. A typical schedule would include work Monday-Friday from 8am to 5pm with periodic changes depending on departmental events.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Work in this position is a combination of sedentary work and public interaction, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. This employee must have the ability to assist children in some situations and assist with displaying firefighting gear.
