Library Assistant
This position is with Alamance County Government, located at May Memorial Library in North Carolina. The salary is $3,106.13 monthly for part-time, non-benefited work. The position is part-time, 25 hours per week, requiring one evening per week and weekend rotation.
Job Purpose:
Within this role the candidate will promote ACPL's values and mission while following established policies and procedures. The purpose of this position is to serve the informational, reference and reading needs to library patrons of all ages at ACPL and will be expected to perform any and all routine tasks necessary to the operation of the library system. This position works under the supervision of the Public Services Manager.
The best candidate will possess a strong commitment to provide customer-focused service for a positive library experience and to relate tactfully and courteously with a wide range of diverse patrons and community members.
Responsibilities:
- Promote ACPL's values and mission.
- Follow and enforce established library policies and procedures.
- Work all public service desks at May Memorial Public Library and other branches as needed.
- Assist with the maintenance of library collections.
- Assist patrons through reference interactions, reader advisory inquires and in the use of technology and online resources.
- Work with the Branch Manager in developing, promoting, and presenting programs for adults reflective of the community demographic and patron interest.
- Increase skills and knowledge through professional reading, workshops and webinars.
- Additional examples of work performed include making new library cards for patrons, helping patrons locate items, checking materials in and out on patron accounts, organizing returned items, shelving library materials, receiving payments for fines and fees, assisting patrons with the Self-Check-out, answering phone calls and routing calls to appropriate staff, taking responsibility for the appearance of the library, and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma required; some college preferred.
- One year of customer service experience required.
- Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong customer service orientation with the ability to provide respectful, equitable assistance to patrons of all backgrounds.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, internet searching, and social media platforms.
- Ability to learn and apply library-specific technology, including ILS systems and electronic resources.
- Creativity in program planning, display design, and patron engagement.
- Strong problem-solving skills, sound judgment, and accountability.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; bend, reach, squat, and lift up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to push/pull loaded book carts and access materials on high and low shelves.
- Ability to effectively communicate with patrons and staff in a busy environment.
