Job Summary

Salary Grade 58. FLSA status:
Exempt.
Reports to:
EC Teacher. Work week schedule:
Monday – Friday.
Hours:
40 per week. Number of months per year: 10.
The EC Teacher Assistant provides human support and paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers or other professionals to meet instructional objectives. The assistant helps students with disabilities achieve goals and provides personal care and mobility assistance, academic and behavioral support, and may lead small group activities. The assistant also assists with general housekeeping and clerical duties.
Minimum Qualifications- Associate's Degree.
- At least one of the following: (a) hold an Associate’s Degree; (b) 48 semester hours of transferable college coursework; or (c) 96 contact hours of college coursework and passing scores on the Work Keys test.
- Knowledge of practices, methods, and techniques used in teaching the special education population.
- Understanding of lead teacher activities, daily classroom routines, student handbook rules, emergency procedures, organization and administration principles, and curriculum for the assigned grade.
- Ability to maintain files and information.
- Skill in operating classroom and instructional equipment, audio‑visual equipment, adaptive equipment, and standard office, word and data processing equipment.
- Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well‑being of students, particularly when students are participating in an inclusive activity.
- Ability to motivate students, maintain order and discipline in a classroom, and establish effective working relationships with teachers, peers, parents, students, and administrators.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Associate's Degree.
- Experience working with exceptional children.
- Equivalency:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- For students with Emotionally Disabled status: initial certification in a Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) program and maintenance of that certification through the required renewal process.
- Valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Three to five years of experience working in an EC classroom or environment.
- Spanish speaking.
- Assist classroom teacher with specific duties, specialized tasks, and instructional and behavioral objectives.
- Work with individuals, small groups, or large groups as assigned by the teacher.
- Assist with behavior modifications requested by the teacher.
- Lift, move, and operate adaptive equipment.
- Assist students with personal care tasks such as lavatory use, clothing, hygiene, diapering, toileting, and wash‑up routines.
- Escort students as assigned by the teacher or administrator.
- Assist with mobility needs, including lifting, positioning, and transferring students in and out of wheelchairs, loading and unloading on/off the bus, and transporting students in and around the school and on field trips.
- Monitor students during assigned periods to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Provide programmed practice activities and repetitions as developed by the teacher, therapist, or pathologist.
- Report student concerns directly and expeditiously to the teacher and assist with resolution.
- Assist with breakfast, lunch, snack, including clean‑up.
- Maintain confidential records and files.
- Participate in staff development activities as directed by the Department for Exceptional Children.
- Perform additional duties as requested by the teacher, principal, or District EC Staff.
